Whole Kubuntu 7.10 OS unbelievably unstable

    Hi,

I'm running Kubuntu 7.10 on a Asus A6K laptop and the whole KDE environment is somehow unbelievably unstable. First I thought it would be mainly GTK problem, but the reason seems to be somewhere else. My software crash quite frequently. Usually it's: kwin, kicker, Amarok, Kopete, Inkscape, konqueror or GIMP, and today OpenOffice.org just as I had made a document ready. AND they leave no crashing messages (except for rarely konqueror, kopete, kwin and kicker, the usual crash message in the end) and cannor get e.g. the documents back in oo.o. In konsole it usually shows only "The program has lost it connection to the X-server on 0.0" or something like that.

I've checked my memories for 8h with memtest86+, ran 8 times, got 8 clean runs. My Temps Aren't awfully high (below 70C) and the software crash even when not using very much memory or got much stress.

With a few words: The system is unusable. And it's a pity 'cause I love mu Kubuntu and wouldn't like to back to Windows, just as I've learned to manage it well.

Has anyone got any ideas howto solve this ****, 'cause I'm getting sick and tired running the system this way, never knowing when You'll have to start it all over or when the RTS your playing next time crashes so that your buddies cannot play well...

    Crash message from konq:

Re: Whole Kubuntu 7.10 OS unbelievably unstable

Both seem to be caused by graphics problems...
What's your video hardware? Which driver are you using?

Also consider a reinstall. If you're going to do it anyway, might as well try it. Something might've gotten corrupted during the installation.
    For external use only.

I have Nvidia 6200 GO (64mb inside, 192mb shared). I had nvidia-new, but I just chanced it to nvidia as I decided to try if the problem is there. So I'll check if this will solve it all.

Feel pretty stupid for not checking the driver earlier. =)

Re: Whole Kubuntu 7.10 OS unbelievably unstable

Change the driver to nv, and for good measure uninstall the nvidia-glx package

If this fixes the problem, then unfortunately it's due to the proprietary drivers. Because it's a binary blob with a thin 'layer' to interface with the kernel, it's difficult to satisfactorily troubleshoot. Your only recourse might be to try different combinations of driver and kernel version.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

Or given the list of apps you have had problems with just disable the proprietory drivers. If you don't do anything that needs 3d (ie. running compiz) then you don't need them.

PS. I have an ASUS A6 series laptop as well and kubuntu runs fine. So whatever the problem is it should be solvable.

Well I play TA-Spring and use Blender sometimes, so disabling them fully is no option, but I guess I'll have to test the nv option. (The changing the nvidia-glx-new to nvidia-glx didn't solve the problem, my kwin and amarok crashed today without any crash message and konqueror with the same traceback as usual.)

Re: Whole Kubuntu 7.10 OS unbelievably unstable

Is your Asus using an AMD64 processor?

I had all kinds of driver problems with the nvidia driver and my Turion-based HP laptop. Have just had to chuck the driver completely and fall back to the nv driver.

There are a whole rake of issues that are 64-bit related in the latest nvidia drivers. There was supposed to be an updated driver released about three weeks ago but no joy yet.

There's a couple of hints here that might be of some use:
              http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=58498

Keep an eye particularly for the "iommu=off" boot option hint.

I have an AMD mobile Sempron 32-bit.

I'm now testing the nv driver, and so far no crashes, but they usually come just I have reported that there are none. =)

I was just wondering, that could the problem be somehow realted with the fact that my graphics card uses (a bit) shared memory (192mb)?

I've been on my computer for about 6 hours now today (just surfing, chatting ang listening music) and the result is:
                  - 3 kopete crashes
                  - 1 kwin crash
                  - 1 kicker crash (after which it was able to start itself again)
                  - 1 kdesktop crash
                  - 2 amarok crashes
                  - almost 10 konqueror crashes (+ 2 or 3 netscape plugin crashes with Adobe flash 9)

All these while using the nv driver. Heats are now about 50C in the core.

Have you tried running on the Live CD for any length of time? It's not very responsive, but it would be interesting to see if your hardware behaves the same when only the Live CD is running it.

Another interesting experiment would be to run a different (non-*buntu) OS on Live CD -- I think Fedora has one that you can download, and Elive has a nice one but it takes forever to download the development version and he wants money for the stable version.

This *really* sounds heat-related. Have you tried an inexpensive laptop cooler, the type with two little usb-powered fans? I had lockup problems with my IBM Thinkpad on warm days; the cooler eliminated the problem. Temperature sensors are useful, but may not reveal a hotspot somewhere inside the box.

Thank You. =) I managed to find some of antecs products from a finnish retailers website.

Now I have made myself a cheap mans version and put 2 sticks under my laptop to see if the heat really is the problem. The air flow seems to be quite good with only the sticks. I'm just wondering that why I didn't have any problems with my Windows installation... but anyhow I'm trying to solve this out now and my Fedora live CD got just burned so It's time to try it out.
