Compiz - can't change settings in manager (SOLVED)

I've had a couple of compiz updates over the last week. I'm not sure if these may have caused the problem I have now, but I am unable to change any settings in the settings manager (hadn't rebooted for a week or so). I am unable to tick or remove a tick in any of the boxes. I can run it with kdesu, but the settings do not take.

Has anyone else had this problem? Google wasn't my friend today.

Somewhere there's a "plugins list" (might be under "preferences"), make sure that "automatically sort list of plugins" is checked (or words to that effect). Drove me half-mad before working that one out...

Just a tick in a box. You must have a heap more patience (and expertise) than I do. Thank you very much, James. You're a good boy.
