Here is a quick way to install kbirthday.
Building from source just does not seem to work.
The following worked for me:
wget ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/dag/redhat/9...h9.rf.i386.rpm
sudo alien kbirthday-0.7.3-2.rh9.rf.i386.rpm
sudo dpkg -i kbirthday_0.7.3-3_i386.deb
