Kubuntu randomly freezes after a certain period

Seems that Gutsy just decides to freeze after a couple of hours. It'll be absolutely fine, purring like a kitten, then just completely freezes and needs hard reboot....

Am in wondows now, its run fine non stop for the past day or so with not an issue, but Gutsy is doing this every time its on.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

    Maybe runaway process ?:

    Maybe logs tell it:

    Maybe Ksysguard or top helps:

    Ksysguard

KDE System Guard allows you to monitor various statistics about your

    top - display Linux tasks

    SYNOPSIS
    top -hv | -bcHisS -d delay -n iterations -p pid [, pid ...]

The traditional switches ’-’ and whitespace are optional.

    DESCRIPTION
The top program provides a dynamic real-time view of a running system.
It can display system summary information as well as a list of tasks
currently being managed by the Linux kernel. The types of system sum‐
mary information shown and the types, order and size of information
displayed for tasks are all user configurable and that configuration
can be made persistent across restarts....

      Yes, what Rog131 said.

Plus, when you think it is frozen, don't reach for that power button! Instead, shut it down gracefully like this:

After a change in the current date I got a black screen. Unfortunately I made a hard reboot and now I only have the black screen. After the boot I have the grub then a screen with the logo kubuntu and progress bar after that only black screen. I tried to follow the sequence Alt-Sysrq rseiub but it doesn't work.

A likely cause is a corrupted xorg.conf file. You can try using dibl's How to: Get started with no GUI

              hey, thanks guys (and gals?)

I set the limit to 1024mb and seems to have sorted it, but time will tell

Thanks again for the solution, wonderful to be able to use Linux again without a whole freezeup every 2 hours

Ok, still the same problem, which log would the error be in? find the whole log ting rather confusing to be honest

Open a Konsole window and enter
                  Code:
                  top
Then put that window down in the corner somewhere where you can keep an eye on it. It will always keep the process using the most resources at the top of the list. When your system "freezes" (which it really isn't, but getting very bogged down), you will know which process is the bad boy causing the problem. That is Step 1 to figuring out how to fix it.

Will give it a go, but it really is freezing, very suddenly. No slow downs, jsut an immediate freeze, music goies into crash skipping, no keybourad like activfation or deactivation, no moues cursor movement, no hdd activity, simple complete freeze up.

When you believe it is frozen, you can shut it down gracefully by holding down Ctrl-Alt-SysRq, and pressing, in sequence, R S E I U and B. It may not respond instantly (and you may not observe it responding), but it will shut down.

Thing is though, how come there could be a runaway prog still when I have 6gb ram and a max of 768mb to any prog? I never had this issue with Feisty... ever! Is that definitely going to be the issue? (p.s. I tried 512mb limit and certain progs just wouldn't run)

You using an nVidia card with the proprietary drivers?

Caused random freezes for me with Gutsy, pretty much as you describe: no warning, just stopping. Had some initial success downgrading to an older kernel, but eventually had to just switch to using the nv driver and wait for an update. There's a good bit of info on the nVidia forums.

Aaah that could be it The nv driver doesn't allow use of opengl etc so a bit useless for what I use Kubuntu for I suppose if that is the cause. Is there a release date for a fix at all?

                            Thanks btw x

No date for the updated driver. Last I saw it was due at the beginning of November, so "any day now" is probably the best bet.

I just hope no one at nVidia used the phrase "in time for Christmas" out loud. Usually a death sentence for any deadline...
