KDE Desktop Device-Icon Disappeared After Gutsy Update

I recently updated from Kubuntu 7.04 to 7.10.
When the OS 7.10 rebooted, KDE Desktop Device-
Icons were gone. Went to User/.kde/share/kdeglobals
-no help and /usr/share/icons-no help. Finally, tried
/media and right-clicked HDD icon and selected copy>
home>desktop. All of a sudden the missing Device-Icons
appeared. I'm at a loss to determine what happened.
Would appreciate any help. When I rebooted; the icons
    were missing again.

Re: KDE Desktop Device-Icon Disappeared After Gutsy Update

I have the same issue, but I'm still using Feisty. The 'change in behavior' presented itself when I upgraded to KDE 3.5.8 (it may have been 3.5.7 - can't remember), so it isn't an issue with Gutsy per se. In my case, it's my external USB drives that are affected. They are available (System Menu | Storage Media), and each will show up on the Desktop when clicked.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Re: KDE Desktop Device-Icon Disappeared After Gutsy Update

I finally found out how to fix this.
First: Right-click on Desktop and select Create new>Device link>Hard-drive.
Second: when window opens type in name you chose.
Third: Left-click on Device tab and enter /dev/device designation assigned by OS(located in /etc/fstab).
Fourth: Left-click OK and window will close and Device icon will appear on Desktop.
It's important that the right Device information be entered in Device tab
or Dolphine will not open and an error message will be displayed.
