    Firefox. Pop ups appearing. Box is checked "block pop up windows"

    I have been having this problem ever since I upgraded to Gutsy. Probably before too.

    I am browsing with Firefox. Suddenly I get pop ups. I have the box checked in preferences marked "block pop up windows". Java and Javascript are enabled. I run NoScript http://noscript.net/ to limit scripts only to "safe sites". One site in particular is giving me problems and if I remove that site from the "safe sites" list then the problem goes away. Annoyingly it also makes that site less usable.

    I'm not running any ad-blocking software. If I don't want ads I just prevent all images from being shown.

    Is there an issue with new adware/software affecting Firefox and being able to bypass the standard "block pop up windows" checked box?

    Probably a different method of showing ads than the one(s) Firefox blocks.
    What's the site?

      Most pop-up blockers use various heuristics to try and decide whether the pop-up is the result of user interaction, ie clicking on a link that opens a popup, or spontaneous, ie a popup ad. And it doesn't always work. That is why you still end up with popups on this site; however it's displaying the ads it's fooling firefox into thinking you requested them.
      I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

        I use a sniping site called justsnipe http://www.justsnipe.com. They use some kind of method to generate popups that FF and variants couldn't figure out. Thankfully, adblock filled the gap. To someone who says it's image all or nothing, you really need to check out adblock. So easy and so much less clutter.

          I use the hosts file from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
          Works very good too in blocking pop-ups etc.

            I also use Privoxy... Mostly superseded by Adblock, but there are a few things it's still good for.
