7.10 very distant sounds?

I can hear very distant, very very quiet sounds when I do various things in many programs- seem to be the 'default sound scheme' sort of noises but extremely faint - I have never touched sound settings or set a sound scheme- online radio and cd's play finest kind (ie, yes my speakers are turned on ...)

I've dug through every sound adjusting thing I can find, but can't get these sounds up where I can hear them to tell what they are.

any suggestions?

Usually those are set under System Settings --> Notifications.
