Kaffeine and other aspect ratio problems

After installing the mediubuntu files for playing DVD + some codecs, Kaffeine play videos in the 1:1 format, be it they are 4:3 or 16:9.
It's not always right in VLC player either, but not so bad, and easier to fix. .flv seems better than .wmw in VLC.

Some searches has given me ideas regarding settings in the /etc/X11 xorg.conf file that I don't find. And, as this problem was aggravated after the installation of codecs and things, it seems to be more software.

    Any ideas?

Are you saying, that your system display settings changed 'after' you installed the medibuntu codecs needed to play commercial DVDs and ran Kaffeine?

Re: Kaffeine and other aspect ratio problems

We may gain some insight into what might be going on by looking at your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and the first backup of it - /etc/X11/xorg.conf.1

If you will copy/paste each we can see what, if any, changes exist between them.

NilsA sounds like a name from some familiar country.
Aspect ratios can be set in kaffeine. I don't think this problem is related to xorg, but to pushing a button which is a hotkey in kaffeine.

While playing, select "player" on the menu ("spiller").
Then go to "video" > "aspect ratio" ("aspektforhold")
You will see that there are 4 preset options. Quadratic is one of them, and it is mapped to F9 as a hotkey. I guess you pressed that sometime while running Kaffeine. Select "Automatic", that should work fine for most videos, but if there are problems you can go to this menu and override the settings.

There is also an option under "View" ("vis") in the menu for maintaining aspect ratio while you resize the window. Alternatively it can be set to follow your resizing interactively.

Re: Kaffeine and other aspect ratio problems

Good to know info. Thanks. I've never adjusted ratio settings in Kaffeine, so I've never experienced any problems with my system display settings. But I'll remember this.

Sikkert riktig. Men etter at deler av System Settingsmenyene ble på Japansk, er de nå satt tilbake til engelsk. Så, nå vet du om det er samme land eller nabo

Aspect ratios can be set in kaffeine. I don't think this problem is related to xorg, but to pushing a button which is a hotkey in kaffeine.

Sorry - did not work. 4:3 give near 3:4. (It is a 4:3 video.)

                    Not the Heinkel_111 idea.

The .1 file is before installing the correct monitor.

Oh, and I forgot - I have the wrong log-in screen problem, or wrong innitial X, I assume. The revolving "wheel" s more like 0 than round, and the login screen has blact stripes to the left and the right. Next is the blue standard desktop, but in four parts . big upper left smalles down right, and the two others long. Then a flicker, and the correct 1600x1200 appear.

So, now it's Saturday night here, I'll open a bottle of wine, and hope for good ideas tomorrow.

Re: Kaffeine and other aspect ratio problems

                            A little update here.

It seems to me the problem is different configuration for the steps of the booting into KDE.

First graphical step is black with a revolving wheel. The aspect ratio is wrong here.

Second is the log-in screen. Same as the first.

Third - correct aspect ratio, but wrong size desktop (if that is the correct term). The screen is filled up, but the blue KDE background picture is tiled.

Last - the "Loading KDE" - just fine.

                            My guess is:

The resolution in the three first are set to 1024/768 or 1240/1024.

The two first have false aspect ratio for the monitor type (Nokia 446XPro - 19 inch 4:3.

At the third step above, the correct monitor type is set, but the graphic background is still set too low - so it tiles up the 1600/1200 correct resolution.

Only the last do discover the correct settings - both background and resolution set to 1600/1200.

I know there are other places where the graphical properties are set - but son't know where.

Is the nokia screen a digital flat panel with 1600x1200 resolution?
Is it a desktop computer, or what kind of machine is it?

Do you know anything about xrandr? It is an extension that allows you to change between multiple display sizes and orientations. I think it is enabled by default in kubuntu, and sometimes (as with me in ...edgy it was, I believe) it comes out wrong for some reason.
I had to manually enter a xrandr something command everytime after loading to get my dual screens activated right. the xorg.conf file was correct all the time.

If you have a digital flat panel, you probably don't need all those resolutions in your xorg.conf.
Mine is quite simplified now (I am showing only the lines related to screen, graphics card aka device and monitor, the rest I have omittted here):

                              EndSection

                              Section "Screen"

                              	DefaultDepth	24
                              	SubSection "Display"
                              		Viewport 0 0
                              		Depth 24
                              		Modes "1600x1200"
                              	EndSubSection
                              EndSection
Only one resolution is possible under X, all confusion is thus eliminated :P (or not, that xrandr thing still got me some time ago...)
