What error message? Have you tried installing the package using apt-get? Does it actually WORK after this doubtful install?
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

i think yes! although i can't be totally certain!

it tells me that packages could not be installed due to crappy downloaded packages or "something else i can't remember right now"

          Re: update issue

Open a console shell and type:
          Code:
          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get install
          sudo dpkg --configure -a
See if this doesn't fix the problem.
