    Change default media player

My default media player for .mpg files is kaffeine and I want to change it to vlc media player. I've tried right clicking the file then open with other, select vlc media player, check "remember application association" and it looks like it does something but the change never takes!
    Any idea's?

You can right-click on .mpg file, select 'properties'. From there, click the little wrench icon that is to the very right of the 'type' category. Then you will see a new dialog, and in there you can set the application preference order by moving vlc to the top of the application list.
