    Monitor resolution issues

    I just had to change monitors, from one capable of 1600x1200 to one capable only of 1280x1024 (old one was horribly blurry at all resolutions, new one is much sharper). Both are CRTs.

    I now get an 'out of scan range' error from the monitor when booting, when the Kubuntu logo and progress bar would normally be displayed. The nVidia logo appears fine, then the login screen has virtual resolution larger than physical resolution (ie mouse move to edge pans screen). Once I'm logged in everything is fine.

    How can I fix these issues?

    Here is my xorg.conf. I configured the new monitor with KDE's tools.

    I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

    Do you know the vertical and horizontal refresh rate specs for that "new" monitor? Apparently one of your modes is listing a refresh rate outside the spec. If I were guessing, I'd guess that "43" that I see in some of the modeline values might be the culprit. If you want to experiment, try changing all the "43"s to "55" or something like that.

      Or, to generate the whole thing over again, execute "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", backing up /etc/X11/xorg.conf first.

        That fixed the login screen, but not the boot screen; I think at that stage X hasn't even started, it's probably a kernel parameter I need to change, I'll look later.

        PS: Sorry for slow reply, it's because I never WATCH my computer boot! I turn it on and go make tea or something 8)
