why does libxine1 package need gnome libraries on kubuntu?

to keep my kubuntu up to date, i did "aptitude update & aptitude dist-upgrade". The command returns the following.

Why does libxine1 depend on gnome libraries? and Why should I have to install so many of gnome libraries on kubuntu all of a sudden? I'd like to upgrade libxine1 and keep my kubuntu install uptodate without having to install the gnome libraries. Any solutions?

Someone decided that (from libxine1-plugins description):

This empty package is just for your convenience and depends on all
available xine plugin packages.

Any solutions?

Tampering deb

Get libxine1-plugins_1.1.8-2ubuntu2~gutsy1_all.deb (45,1 KB) and then:

Unpack it -> You have folder libxine1-plugins_1.1.8-2ubuntu2~gutsy1_all and there are:

- control.tar.gz
- data.tar.gz
- debian-binary

Unpack control.tar.gz to the /libxine1-plugins_1.1.8-2ubuntu2~gutsy1_all/DEBIAN/. There are:

- control
- md5sums

Open control-file in the text editor and remove libxine1-gnome (>= 1.1.8) so:

Depends: libxine1-ffmpeg (>= 1.1.8), libxine1-misc-plugins (>= 1.1.8), libxine1-x (>= 1.1.8), libxine1-console (>= 1.1.8)

Go to the top level and pack deb again:

dpkg -b libxine1-plugins_1.1.8-2ubuntu2~gutsy1_all

You get:

warning, `libxine1-plugins_1.1.8-2ubuntu2~gutsy1_all/DEBIAN/control' contains user-defined field `Original-Maintainer'
dpkg-deb: building package `libxine1-plugins' in `libxine1-plugins_1.1.8-2ubuntu2~gutsy1_all.deb'.

Now you have libxine1-plugins_1.1.8-2ubuntu2~gutsy1_all.deb (45,4 KB)

You can install it with gdebi.

Then

sudo apt-get -s autoremove

will tell (if you allready have libxine1-gnome) :

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
libxine1-gnome

Is it worth doing?


or you could remove libxine1-gnome (it will remove libxine1-plugins):

Completely removed the following packages:
libxine1-gnome

Removed the following packages:
libxine1-plugins

Actually something is just screwed up. libxine1-plugins is not installed here but gets pulled in by the update. libxine-dev, libxine1, and libxine1-ffmpeg are all the are 'upgrades' here so one of those is the culprit.

This is coming in on backports too btw.

Just looked, libxine1 has "required: libxine1-plugins or libxine1-misc-plugins". That probably should be a recommend unless something changed that actually requires the plugins.

Anyone still seeing this or did something happen to make me get stuck with the problem?

I'm getting a little tired of seeing 3 updates all the time and have no desire to install the extra crap I don't need or use that these want to pull in.

I haven't checked, but the plans for Hardy Heron say:

Summary

Debian switched to installing recommends by default (the debian policy says they should be installed in all but the most unusual situations). We want to do the same for hardy.

Release Note

All package tools like apt, aptitude, synaptic will install packages marked as Recommends now (in addition to the ones marked as Depends).

This gives the user a more flexible package managmanet experience.

that's the bug... that says it's fixed... for hardy... which is great for a bug filed AGAINST gusty. comments are welcome or the typical G* first and K* never will go on just like the bug about the new version of flash.

morons. it's bit harsh but it's more true every day it seems like.

and if it is going to be recommends by default then they better quit recommending crap.
