I have just installed polish remix of kubuntu 7.10. And everything works well... This version of kubuntu is here http://ubuntu.pl/pobierz.php This is new version... and there is few codecs and another software... If you want you can install english language from the internet...

European download site, so it probably has the non-free codecs included. Bet that makes somethings easier!

First, never use sudo for apps like Kate. Use kdesu.

Now then, the problem you mentioned is happening to someone else. Probably temporary.
Just to make sure, let's give you a definitely working sources.list (attached). Just "kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list" and paste it in.

This contains only the official repos, with those repos that are less than perfectly reliable commented out.
