    AVAHI

I installed vlc in my slackware box. The package i downloaded from the VLC site link contained a package named avahi which totally killed my slackware installation. So i checked my adept, and to my surprise, avahi is also here. So i decided to remove avahi, and -this being my fault for not checking the changes- adept unisntalled kde and kubuntu desktop and all the packages that come within. I watched in amusement how all my setup was being eliminated little by little, i didn't shut X though. So, i decided to let it finish it's work. I am currently downloading all the packages, -Konqueror as well- and i am able to write this post, simply because i had opened the message window BEFORE i hit APPLY CHANGES. Currently at 88% downloading. So, what is avahi? why does Kubuntu use it? Why should it kill all my installation? Is my firewall configured to block avahi communication with the outside world? or am i under the ILLUSION that this BEAUTIFUL OS we know as Kubuntu is safe?

Currently at 97% I will hit "post" after all the packages have been reinstalled, just to be on the safe side

      Re: AVAHI

I read that last night around 1 am while trying to save my slackbox and all i could understand from that is that it is a security issue, i don't believe AVAHI should be a dependency for kde or kubuntu-desktop
