When it crashes, do you get the crash handler popup window? Can you run a backtrace on it?

Re: Samba shareing files, but read-only. Writeable?

This is getting serious. I am not a samba specialist but I am quite sure that the best way to netork two Linux (Unix) machines is not with samba. Samba is built for Lin / Win networks. To share files between Linux boxes I would use NFS (network file sharing).

Bthw you can safely deinstall samba. What you cannot safely (without removing kubuntu-desktop) remove is smb-client.

You have to stop samba on both boxes before removing.
kmenu->systemsettings->advanced->system services. Scroll down to samba in admin mode and stop it.

      For some reading on NFS:

      and here:

I hope this points you in the right direction.

Re: Samba shareing files, but read-only. Writeable?

Snowhog: I get a popup window which tells me that konqueror has crashed... is that what you mean? What's a backtrace?

Fintan: I'm trying to use samba because eventually I plan to add my old old laptop which runs windows 95 to the lan. I did kill samba in system settings>advanced>services because I hoped it would help konqueror recover; didn't work. Synaptic still told me deinstalling samba would cost me kubuntu desktop as well. Even deinstalling swat would cost me kubuntu desktop.

Question: Is it possible to configure/use samba in the GUI?

Probably not a Konqueror problem. I suspect Samba. Try reinstalling (or purging) some Samba packages.

By the way, have you considered setting the file's permissions to something like 0666 (i.e. read-write for everyone)?

Yes, I set file permissions for my public files in konqueror>properties for everybody (before konq>properties started crashing).

Again, if I try to uninstall or purge samba or any of the programs which go along with it, synaptic tells me that Kubuntu-desktop will go too. If that, I'm wondering if it would be better just to reinstall.

Re: Samba shareing files, but read-only. Writeable?

Well, thanks for trying ^_^. I read somewhere that one person had better luck configuring samba in Ubuntu than in Kubuntu; since I have to reinstall anyway, I'll install Ubuntu and try to configure samba. If success, then I'll try downloading the KDE packages. I'm also going to try in Mandriva and Fedora.

I just wish Kubuntu had the ability to install/configure samba from the GUI, so that file sharing could be as simple as in that other OS, (K)Ubuntu isn't going to be successful competing with windows until all that stuff can be done by a dummy from menus. Any distro can connect *itself* to the internet now, and nearly all can do it with wireless as well as with ethernet; that's the way it needs to be for file sharing and all other common activities.

If someone DOES know how to install/configure samba from the GUI, Plesase post it or email me. GUI, not command line; I'd really really like to know if it can be done that way.

I find Webmin to be a useful GUI for many things, including Samba.

                  How about in System Settings?

That's what I did. Didn't work; best sharing I could get was read-only.

Maybe I didn't get all the options correct?
