Solution: Compiz doesn't draw window decoration for maximised windows

I installed Gutsy on my ThinkPad T41, and all was good (using Emerald, not kde-window-decorator)... until I maximised a window...

It refused to draw window decorations, replacing them with white space. I baffled over this until something occurred to me...

The GPU on my laptop has a maximum texture resolution of 1024x1024, and the screen's resolution is 1024x768. When the window was maximised, the required texture size for window decorations + shadows was greater than 1024... so it barfed.

Turning off the shadows (in Emerald settings, radius = 0.4 or below) solves the problem. No shadows, but at least the title bars don't disappear!

Hmm. I'd file a bug against Compiz, saying that shadows (and/or other extra-window effects) shouldn't be drawn for maximized windows, for this reason and because it would probably save a little processing power.
