cannot share files betwen windows XP and Gutsy

Hi!
I didn't get Gutsy(Kubuntu) to share files with Windows XP(running in VMWare). I followed the steps from many guides, but I still don't get it. Please help me with an idiots guide.
[i have followed all the steps, but when i tried to connect from Win(with 'Map Network Device'), I didn't get acces]

Also, I would like to know how to improve the speed of Windows XP running on VMWare

My desk configuration: sempron 2800+(2200Mhz), 1GB DDR1, video: NVIDIA GeForce 6200 turbocache, with Kubuntu Gutsy running.

If you read the guide that was linked, you'll see it requires you to install a customised version of the Samba server available from the VMWare website.

Can you tell us how you've configured networking in the virtual machine? That might help us suggest the best way to solve your problem.

Use player for running your guest machine. Don't install vmware player from the repos though it is way to old. et it from here:

Server is great for installing and configuring your virtual machine but is very slow. Player is very fast. On my machine xp runs as fast or sometimes faster than the HD install, which I haven't booted in a year. You can also safely remove your anti everything software and your firewall as your linux "host" machine is running your Internet connection.

Additionally you can play with the amount of ram you allot to your "guest". I have 256 MB out of 1gig alloted and can easily run photoshop cs, flash cs and Dreamweaver cs all at the same time Beware you don't give it too much as this will slow down your "host" system considerably.

As for sharing here is my smb.config for reference:

workgroup = FINTANHOME
interfaces = eth0
map to guest = bad user

[Data]

path = /Data
read only = no
guest ok = yes
case sensitive = no
strict locking = no
force user = fintan



[HP4200]

printing = cups
path = /var/tmp
printable = yes
guest ok = yes
guest only = yes

Please note the force user line. This is apparently required by gutsy.

Of course samba has to be installed as well, which it is not by deault

I've got the share thing, and also vmplayer is realy fast.

You are very welcome. Just another bit of advice. Make a clone of you xp just in case
