USB flash drive will not work with Kubuntu Gutsy

    Hello all,
I have searched for a solution to this problem all over and have found similar problems, but not mine. I have been using Ubuntu gutsy for quite some time with no problems (or I already fixed the problems I had). I recently instlled the kde-desktop and have been very impressed... with one exception. When I plug in a usb flash drive, the box pops-up recognizing the drive and asking what I want to do with it. If I click to view the contents I get an error message reading:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. In come cases usedful info is found in syslog -try dmesg |tail or so

    Here is the dmesg:

[17179667.376000] Vendor: PNY Model: USB 2.0 FD Rev: PMAP

I don't know where to go with this. It works fine with the Gnome desktop but not in KDE. Any help would be appreciated.

Out of curiousity, what happens if you tell the pop-up window to "do nothing" and then try to access the flash drive via Konqueror and/or Media Storage?

Since about the upgrade I have a similar problem with some drives but not all.

The work around is via KwikDisk, when I right-click the drive in this utility it mounts without a hitch.
At the moment I can't be bothered to look any further, at some point I might do a clean install.

If I click to do nothing in the window, and then try and access the drive elsewhere the result is the same.

You don't by chance have an entry for this device in your /ect/fstab file? There shouldn't be one, as USB HDs get identified dynamically - the /dev/xxxx designation changes from boot to boot when more than one USB HD device is connected(unless you are using UUIDs).

No, there is no entry in the /etc/fstab for this device
