Kubuntu asking for install cd

I have just installed Kubuntu for the first time. I am setting up new programs ect. When installing Kubuntu keeps asking for the install cd, this is very annoying! Is it possible to cache the install info or am I doing something wrong. I would also point out I am very new to linux.

Open Adept Manager and click on Manage Repositories. You need to uncheck the CD option.

That is a new 'feature' with gutsy. I can see the value in it as it is a common question, but once you have a network connection, it is annoying. You can stop it from checking for a CD/DVD by going to K>System>Adept Manager then Adept>Manage Repositories>Third-Party Software and uncheck the box that says cdrom: then just click Close and Adept>Quit or carry on with whatever software installation you were attempting in Adept. Good luck.

Yes, that is annoying. Upon first installation, it automatically sets up the installation CD as a software "source", and demands it be loaded every time thereafter when you "fetch".

So, open Adept Manager, click "Adept > Manage Repositories" click the "Third Party Software" tab, highlight the line that refers to the Kubuntu 7.10 CD, and click the "remove" button at the bottom of that panel.

As others have been posting about what they would like to see in future releases, and this problem comes up all the time, it would be a great idea if in all future releases, a README file automatically opens when the desktop is displayed. This README would contain details that the user needs to know in order to avoid confusion. In this regard, the CD as repository item could be listed.

If a person has enough space maybe an option could cache the install files. I don't have any idea of how much space one would need but might be an option. I wouldn't mind leaving my cd in if it would give me an option to "Press any key to boot from cd" rather than simply booting to the cd without asking. Of coarse I could turn of booting to cd in bios but that seems to much work

Packages, when installed, are cached so you don't have to re-download them later. (This is dome automatically.)

However, it caches all packages, and this can, over time, eat up disk space. A "sudo apt-get autoclean" will remove packages that are no longer available (i.e. out of date).
Or, set it up to do it daily by editing /etc/cron.daily/apt.

I don't quite understand this part of the package management application.

On my system, the "cdrom:" option is enabled under the "Third-Party Software" tab. The "gutsy partner" and "gutsy partner (Source Code)" options are disabled.

Which of these three options should be enabled? Should they all be disabled? What exactly do they do?

You should disable the CD Rom option in the Third-Party Software tab. This is marked by default on the LiveCD so that during installation it can pull packages it needs from the CD as opposed from the 'Net. After installation, this option is no longer required, but creates problems when updating Adept when it is still enabled. That's why Adept Manger would ask for the CD.

What about the other two options in the Third-Party Software tab? Should they also be disabled? In other words, should all the options in that tab be turned off?

I have them both disabled. No problems here running it that way.
