Compiz problems - cube is flat and 8 desktops rather than 4

Hi folks, sorry if this has already been covered a million times, and sorry for lack of hard facts.

Installed ubuntu gutsy, got compiz working and all is fine.

Then installed kubuntu-desktop (i prefer kde) and a few problems cropped up.

I now have double the number of desktops in the taskbar than I can actually access - for example I now have 8 little taskbar boxes, but can only select every other one, ie 4.
Whenever I try and spin the cube using the mouse, it isn't a cube, it's flat. When i open up the settings window with K menu or ccsm at the CLI, all the settings are the same as when i'm in gnome, IE appear perfect.

    Any help appreciated!

    Jon

Well, maybe only a couple thousand times ....

OK, your default Kubuntu installation is set to 2 desktops. So, when you follow the guidance to set Compiz horizontal size to 4, guess what you get?

So, right-click your desktop, choose "configure", and set the number of desktops down to 1, and you'll be good to go.

Also, your kicker (aka taskbar) will probably demonstrate the bugginess of compiz by showing only 1 big desktop instead of the 4 that it is supposed to. In this case, open the konsole and enter
    Code:
    dcop kicker default restart
and it will show correctly (for awhile, anyway). 8)

      Ta

OK done that, but I still have 2 desktops on the taskbar, therefore no cube (still flat). I also can't remember how I set the number of desktops to 4 (or 8, or any number) when setting up compiz - it was a couple of weeks ago and I defected to gnome for a while because it was all spinny and cubic
How do I get the number of desktops back to the number I set?

Cool -- I'm on my way to Heaven!

OK, in KMenu>Settings>Advanced Desktop Effects Mangler you have a "General" icon, and in that you have (on a tab I can't remember, but maybe the second one ) an ability to set the "Horizontal Desktop Size" and you want to make that 4. The two below it need to stay at 1.

Then you need to "x" the "Desktop Cube" and "Rotate Cube" icons.

I'm writing this from memory on a Windoze piece of junk so forgive me if I've missed the nomenclature a bit.

Now, where are my angel wings? 8)

Hmm, well I think you should be flapping your wings by now, but I may have a corruption somewhere.

All fine until I reboot or restart X. Then although I can select any of 4 desktops using the ctrl-alt-mouse combo, I only have one big desktop on the taskbar.
If I then right click on the desktop, change the number of desktops to anything but 1, apply it and then set it back to 1 again, all is well, with 4 desktops on the taskbar.
Then I restart X and back to 1 big taskbar desktop again.

Also, even when 4 windows are shown on teh taskbar, none of them have any little graphics in them apart from the desktop i'm on - for example if I have 4 windows open in desktop 1, they'll appear in teh little taskbar desktop. However if i switch to desktop 3, desktop 1 looks as though it's empty until I switch to it.

Well, a solution seems to be to run
              Code:
              dcop kicker default restart
at the start of each session. I'm struggling to find out where to put this script so it runs for every kde session and not every gnome session (if I put it in init.d it would try and run in gnome too wouldn't it?). Putting it in ~/.xsession doesnt' do anything. Any takers?

Put things in ~/.kde/Autostart to have them run when you log in to a KDE session.
