Re: CPU usage Applet?
Well there is an applet but it is pretty ugly.
Try superkaramba:
http://netdragon.sourceforge.net/ssuperkaramba.html
to install:

Re: CPU usage Applet?
I did something like this:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=12674.0
You right-click the panel, choose "add applet" then get to ksysguard, and then you might need to configure it to show only what you want to see. I chose CPU and memory utilization -- you can have as many sensors represented as you have sensors.
Visually, it's very small and not terribly precise, but at least it gives a clue as to how busy the CPU cores are.

Re: CPU usage Applet?
I just keep KDE System Guard open on desktop #2, with graphs for CPU usage, memory usage, swap usage, network usage, and disk usage. It's pretty handy, and shows a lot more detail than a panel applet. For external use only.

Re: CPU usage Applet?
I like (and am using) GKrellM I actually prefer, but have not been able to locate as a separate application, the system monitor that is included with DSL (Damn Small Linux). But GKrellM is good enough.Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Terrible? I like it a lot... Very configurable. Guess you're not going about it the right way.
Come to think of it, I had a bit of trouble figuring out how it works the first time I found it, too...For external use only.
