Re: The Perfect Kubuntu Desktop
Still not sold about giving up Quicken. Importing taxes, donations, etc., is what I'm concerned about.
Does anyone know where I can get a hold of decent Wine documentation. The stupid simple version. After crapping out my pc twice (thank God for external drives and Acronis), I'm pretty happy with KDE but still feel the need to add more things to it.
An other suggestions (Beagle vs. Dolphin)? Anyone know if KDE4 is stable enough to play around with, especially since I'm a novice and will only learn by breaking things, surfing the web for answers or buying ubuntu bible books from B&N?
Thanks

Kolourpaint is a good Microsoft Paint replacement.
Also, setting up each window with several tabs really increases Krusader's functionality.
I agree with your comment about Gimp, and I use it extensively. But it can't do arrows very well, and MTPaint can. The latter is a surprisingly powerful little bitmap editor, much better than MS-Paint.

Re: The Perfect Kubuntu Desktop
If you run lots of prgrams at the same time, then customizing the taskbars can be really useful in KDE. I remove the taskbar from the lower "kicker" bar, and instead load the kicker with icons for all of my favorite programs. I also make it "auto-hide" so I can have more space on the screen.
I then add an external taskbar at the top of the screen, also auto-hide; in-use programs appear here, sorted by desktop. There's also a "show content by desktop" button for this taskbar; clicking it opens a pull-down that shows all running programs, organized by the desktop they're running on.
I normally use 4 desktops, each with a different background color so that I can tell where I am. Turn on "window thumbnails" and "window icons" to make the desktop pager show nice little previews of each desktop.
Finally, I install the "KasBar" in the middle of the left edge of the screen, also auto-hide, with size set to "large". The KasBar is a taskbar as well, but is much more graphical than the standard one.

Thank you for pointing out the fact that Krusader can display files as icons; I am constantly being further impressed at its power and functionality, it's awesome! In fact, all other file browsers I've used pale in comparison with KrusaderAsus G1S-X3:

Re: The Perfect Kubuntu Desktop
Software front's not that interesting; visual aspects more so.
I use
Desert Red colour Scheme
Glow windows decorations
Serenity widgets
Wallpaper obviously varies, but is usually a deep red.
Panel transparent all the way. On lower resolution machines I like to have a separate taskbar, which is placed directly above the panel, and both set to small.
Applet handles on the panel hidden.
Fuzzy clock, with magenta text (just so it's clear whatever my wallpaper is, since it's transparent)
No compiz or anything like that.I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.
