what is my su password ?

    Hi
im new to kubuntu. so first hi to all thats on this forum.

i have installed kubuntu 7.10 and all went well. however unlike
most other distro's i was not ask for a root password.

i thought ok, maybe the user and root had the same password.
i opened the terminal and type "su" then the usual "password"
was shown on the following line. i type in the user password
since there was no other password to put. bash then responded
saying basically that the password was not valid.

    so im stumped.
    1. does GG.7.10 use su or root user ?
    2. how do i enable the su password ?

maybe its just me not fully understanding the root user structure.

    please help me out
    thanks

Re: what is my su password ?

First, you use sudo from the command line for non-GUI application execution. The password is the one you set for your logon (your password).

If you execute a GUI application from the command line, use kdesu command.

Open a konsole shell and type man sudo and man su to see the differences between the two.

You will get a better understanding of how root access is established and controlled in *ubuntu here.
