ok here is my other problem this one is a little more major. when i go to shut down my computer i get a back screen. it dont shut donw and i have to manually hit the power button. now i cant figure out why this happens. in 7.04 with the old kernel it worked fine, but since the new one it stopped ****ting down. but i dont think its the kernel because when i was sunning slackware it worked fine same with 7.04. and i was running slackware with the new one. i had this same problem with arch also and their community couldnt help. its not as hige as kubuntu's. but any info any one needs can post when i get home today. thanks in advance

Here's a better way to shut your system down if you have a problem with the normal shutdown process:

Re: black screen when shutting down
A few things to try, which depends on exactly what happens.
When it gets stuck, does it happen right after you hit shut down and leave you with a black screen and a cursor or shut down but stick right before it's supposed to turn off?
And if you want to try Teunis' solution, "sudo touch /forcefsck" and a reboot will force a fsck on your drive(s).For external use only.

I'm pretty sure that the "problem" resides with the script controlling the shutdown process. But the inconvenience (to me) of having to power of the laptop manually after a shutdown of Kubuntu is minimal. Would I like to have the laptop actually power off after a log out / shutdown? Yeah, but I am not pressed into finding out what change(s) I have to make to get it.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

The OS has completed the shutdown - it just doesn't finish by powering down the laptop. Thus the need to use the power button.

Re: black screen when shutting down
ok i solved this issue. its something that happens during the upgrade on 7.04 it worked. i upgrade and the shutdown stop functioning. and for some reason tab didnt work in bash with apt-get install. well i back it all up and did a complete format and reinstall. and now everything works. cept i noticed one thing the xorg config file is diffrent in 7.04 vs 7.10. i dont know if this is related but i just did a sudo dpkg reconfigure xorg-server answered the questions and it still works and my resolution is fixed. so maybe during the upgrade something with the xorg file changed. just something i noticed. but hope it helps.

Re: black screen when shutting down
It does seem, that upgrading from one version to another doesn't always go smoothly. In part, it appears to be associated with personal settings in the users /home directory, where settings don't get updated/overwritten during the upgrade. Often, this is why users who report problems as a result of upgrading, seem to solve their problems with a clean install.
Glad that you got your problem fixed. If you have not begun to do so, I would strongly suggest that you start a journal of what you do, and the observable results that result. You will learn more, and it will aid in resolving problems when they do occur.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: black screen when shutting down
I had this problem on my old comp back with edgy eft. I managed to solve it but can't remember the exact edit I made but it was definitely along the lines of those mentioned in the following thread: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3084255.0
Actually I just found an old post of mine:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=12797.0
pointing to the following thread:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=10455.0
as containing the method by which I solved it.
