MPC to MP3. SoundKonverter only supports OGG and WAV (?)

I want to convert some MPCs to MP3. I installed SoundKonverter and the only options it gives me is to-and-from OGG and WAV. I checked the plugins in the configuration menu and it lists 30 plugins, including Lame and Musepack. Out of curiosity I tried to add MPCs and MP3s to the imput file list but it wouldn't accep them.

What am I (or it) doing wrong?

Have you checked to make sure you have all the required packages installed (such as flac, ffmpeg, lame, etc.; installed separately, not as plugins)?

I looked for the 2 in particular I think I need. liblame0 and libmpcdec3 are installed.

Add the Medibuntu repository to your sources.list following the instructions on the link. Then, install the ffmpeg package and see if that helps.

Note: If you don't want to install the entire repository on your system, instructions are provided to download and install single packages.

          Do you have lame ?

          lame
This package contains the frontend encoder binary.
          liblame0
This package contains the dynamic libraries, which provides the encoding
          functionality of lame.
Some programs need both (they need lame (and lame needs liblame0)):

          Hmm - SoundKonverter:
          Recommends: vorbis-tools, flac, ffmpeg, cdparanoia
          Suggests: lame, mplayer (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-custom (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-386 (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-586 (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-686 (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-k6 (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-k7 (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-powerpc (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-g4 (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-amd64 (>= 1.0-pre5) | mplayer-nogui (>= 1.0-pre5)

ffmpeg is in the Ubuntu universe repositories.
          Before you edit, BACKUP !

My mistake was believing that a list labeled "Installed Plugins" was a list of installed plugins.

SoundKonverter's /plugins directory is full of xml configuration files. I opened up usr/share/apps/soundkonverter/plugins/120.lame.soundkonverter.xml and the line that jumped out at me was:
            <enc bin="lame" param="" overwrite="" mime_types="audio/x-mp3" rank="100" silent_param="--quiet" in_out_files="%p %i %o" enabled="true">

I installed the 'lame' pkg with adept which installed /usr/bin/lame. I went to the configuration menu for SoundKonverter and under 'Backends' I now had MP3 encoder and decoder.

            MPC was a little trickier.

I opened 130.musepack.soundkonverter.xml and found 2 interesting lines:

<info about="Encode and decode Muspack files with mppenc and mppdec. You can get mppenc & mppdec at http://www.musepack.net ." author="Daniel Faust" version="301" name="MusePack (mppenc & mppdec)"/>

            and
            <dec output=" decoded (%p.%*s%%)" bin="mppdec" . . .

A trip to www.musepack.net got me the executable mppdec which I copied to /usr/bin.

Thanks all for you help once again.

I have medibuntu in my repositories already so I tried it just to see. After insalling ffmpeg I went to the 'backends' in the configuration menu. Here is what it added:

Decoders - aac, mp4, flac, wma, asf, rv, rm, avi. mpg, wmv, shn

              Encoders and decoders - ogg1, mp32, mp22, m4a, ac3, ra, au
(1 appears as second choice. default is oggenc - oggdec)
(2 appears as second choice. default is lame)

              And no change to MPC

U may ask dibl, as far I understand he is the oldest (experienced) user doing audio files convertions.

                  Hey, I'm only 56!

Seriously, I have not worked with MPCs, sorry. With the Medibuntu repository, you can definitely get all the codecs needed for working with WAV, OGG, and MP3. I use Audacity for recording records, then save in 32-bit WAV, then export to 16-bit WAV and use Gnome Wave Cleaner (gwc) for denoising and de-clicking. And then finally open the cleaned files with Audacity again and export to MP3 format.

I just opened Audacity and took a look, and while it will handle a lot of formats, I don't see MPC.

For converting MPCs in Linux, I guess I'd get help from Mr. Google. :P

My immediate problem was solved by getting the mppdec executable from www.musepack.net. FFMPEG was just an experiment. I thought you might be interested in the results.

That is interesting -- I had not heard about it before! Thanks!
