    <Solved> No kde

I just re-started the system, and it booted into a higher screen-resolution than normal - i usually use 1024x768, this was two settings above that (i can't remember what it was), so i reset it to 1024x768 and re-booted.

Now, there is nothing, it does the usual boot-sequence and disc-checking, then stops before the log-in screen with a black screen, no flashing cursor or anything.

I tried safe mode(?) but have no idea what to do from there.

The video card is a Radeon 8500 Pro, using the restricted drivers - if that's of any help.

If anyone could give me some advice i would appreciate it greatly.

Thank You very much for that information, Rog, it worked like a dream.
I had to boot into "Recovery Mode" because the Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-F1 wouldn't work.

When i re-booted i noticed that the log-in screen had a large black surround, it was still booting into a higher res, so i reset the resolution of the desktop to 1152x864 and re-booted, and all now seems fine.

Incidentally, i see it's now using the Graphics Card: Radeon and Driver: ATI which it never used to, and the res will now go up to 1400x1050.... which i don't think i'll bother with.

I am deeply indebted to you, and i'll make you the same offer i made Snowhog -- if ever you're in Suffolk, England, there's a gallon of very old, very strong cider with your name on it.

      Warmest Regards,

        Re: No kde

It's occurred to me that when i play "Morrowind" via Wine, the screen often jumps and adjusts itself as the game is loading, and on two or three occasions i've had to reset the monitor alignment.

I'd been playing before the re-boot problem, these circumstances are possibly related.
