    Problem with KDE sound system

    Hi,

I just installed Kubuntu 7.10 and I noticed that while I am playing music with Amarok, other (non-KDE-native) applications such as aMSN or Firefox fail to make any sounds. I had the same problem on my SuSE (I think SuSE 9.3) installation which uses Arts and I read that Arts was old and obsolete. But apparently artsd is also running on my Kubuntu now. Is this normal or is this only due to the fact that when I install a new distribution, I keep using the same /home partition I also use under SuSE and before under Mandrake?

What should I do to get sound in all applications?

    Thanks for your help

I just tested, I can play amaarok and on top of that sound from firefox (youtube). We'll figure it out. Are you using alsa ? (I am).

I attach a couple screenshots of my sound settings (in System Settings).

Hope this helps, please let us know!

Re: Problem with KDE sound system

      Hi,

I checked your settings with mine and the only differences are that my Sound buffer is much longer (232 millisec, it was like that), that the auto-suspend delay is 0 seconds (I changed it from 2 to 0 hoping it would help) and that "Full duplex" isn't checked. I'm not sure what that does but checking it doesn't seem to help (unless maybe if you have to reboot first).

I am using the same ALSA MIDI device as you are.

full duplex is needed for skype for instance, it allows to "record and play at the same type" (you can write click on the options and see a context help). I am not sure if it allows also two sound applications to be mixed at the same time ...

I just noticed my Firefox can play sounds, just not from Youtube. So that's more like a plugin issue then. And my aMSN was trying to call playwave which is not on my computer... So the problem is not an ARTS problem...

Ah, for amsn I use "artsplay $sound", seems like the logical way, it shares the sound ok with the rest of KDE.

For flash, I am using the one from 7.10 multiverse (flashplugin-nonfree)

Yep, artsplay works for me too! Does Youtube use Flash? It seems strange to me that it can play the images but not the sounds, while other sites do make sound through Firefox...

You were right, it was the Flash plugin. For some reason the version that came with Kubuntu was rather old. Now it all works perfectly fine.

                    Thanks for your help!
