          Re: Kubuntu Gutsy + Compiz/Emerald + ATI/fglrx: Tips

I attempted to load compiz as your how to showed. When I get to the first step after package installation, it gives me the error listed in the attachment. Running glxgears crashes the desktop completely and I'm forced to control-alt-backspace out and log in again. If I leave the window for the shell open with this error compiz appears to work. However, once the window is closed it makes apps almost unuseable. The titlebar disappears on all apps and I have to use the menues to exit the program or minimize or maximize the window.

The file referred to in the error is where it should be, however compiz fails to open it. When looking at the file properties for this file it shows that superuser permissions are needed to access this file.

Any enlightenment on how to correct this issue would be appreciated. Till then, I'll have to remove compiz from my system Only thing that may be problematic as I see it may be that I'm running the ATI proprietary 7.11 drivers direct from ATI. Thanks in advance for any insight into this.

Compiz was running good on my Dell 1505 laptop but I couldn't play any movies in any application. All I got was color vertical lines and sound. I didn't know how to turn compiz off so I uninstalled it. I would like it back though. Did any one else have this problem? My video card is Nvidia 7300 go and Centrino duo processor.

              To turn compiz off do:
              alt+F2 then type:
              Code:
              kwin --replace

I finally got this thing working, except for a weird problem. My desktop cube consists of only a double sided plane. Any ideas where to look to fix this?

                  Re: Kubuntu Gutsy + Compiz/Emerald + ATI/fglrx: Tips

Yup. Open CCSM (Advanced Desktop Effects Settings) and click on General Options | Desktop Size and change the values to 4 1 1. Right-click on your desktop and select Configure Desktop | Multiple Desktops and set the Number of desktops to 1.

                  You'll have your four-sided Cube.

This marks the end of my migration away from SuSE. I had beryl working under 10.2, but never could get it to work under 10.3. Never really liked their support, I guess I was just used to it (been using it for a LONG time). I'd installed Kubuntu on my wife's (she didn't care), daughter's (she requested it) and my mom's (she doesn't know the difference between any distro) computer and have always loved how easy it was to set up - but I could never get compiz running with my card (I tried several times). I was always kind of embarrassed when people asked what distro I recommended, and I say "KUBUNTU" (I've never liked Gnome) but when they asked what I ran at home, I'd have to say "suse". Got some funny looks from that, but no more! Again, thanks a million!
