Kaffeine

I should probably just give up on this program but I thought I'd ask since it's a popular program and there is no shortage of problems with this particular program. Every time I've ever installed this program, it's been nothing but problems.

Anyway, here is the current situation:
I cannot choose a file because Kaffeine will just play the previous video file. Some files have very little sound. I don't know what happened but I wasn't able to track it down. It will play a different file seemingly by chance but then it will only play that file even if you choose a new video file. This must be a bug?!? It's infuriating and frustrating. I've had Kaffeine problems of other types but this is a new one for me.

Edit: I am not sure yet but it might have been "fixed" after clearing the play list. I was testing by playing various files and all of a sudden, it would not play the file selected (only played a previous file repeatedly regardless of which file was chosen - unless it was a DVD from the DVD drive). Is this a bug? I haven't experienced this before in Kaffeine. I hope the problem doesn't return. If so, I hope clearing the play list fixes it. Seems like a bug?

I don't know much about Kaffeine -- for some reason I tried VLC first, and found it very satisfactory. You might want to give it a spin.

This now seems to be a 'feature' of Kaffeine, it also happens with XMMS - which it didn't used to with Kubuntu 7.04.

I also seem to be unable to get the bookmarks folders to show on the Firefox bookmarks toolbar - the toolbar shows, but i can't get any bookmarks onto it (and yes, i know how to.... ).
This may be because i installed another theme, but i've un-installed it with no change, so maybe i'll un-install Firefox and see if it returns....

What i've done in the meantime is installed EZBar, which un-docks the bookmarks side-bar if required, which is handy.
One oddity i've noticed is that i can add things to the bookmarks toolbar, reload, stop, cut, etc. I don't think that this used to be possible - at least - i never noticed it if it was....


An up-date....
I un-installed Firefox, and re-installed it - only to find that my original bookmarks were still in place, so i tried to <Purge> it, re-boot, then re-install.... the original bookmarks and plugins are still in place.

I (somewhat foolishly) imagined that a <Purge> was just that, a complete removal....

It should be, but I think it keeps user-specific things in ~/.mozilla or something. Try renaming that.

smplayer is the best imo along with kaffeine. i've not experienced any problems ever with kaffeine.

Don't apologize! That is why I titled the thread 'Kaffeine!'

Gee, that program sure frustrated me! That is not the first time or the only issue I've ever had with it. It used to be worse with getting codecs but I got it to work for the most part.

I still say that particular behavior I mentioned is a bug of some kind. Not that one is really going to care much if it can't play a video iso. But, the behavior of being 'stuck' on the last video file chosen was annoying. I found that Kaffeine would put that file in a playlist and wouldn't move to the next file chosen unless I clear the playlist or select a DVD that is in the DVD drive. Well, that is what I was perceiving. It seems like strange behaviour and is the only program that does it (I've tried KMPlayer, MPlayer, VLC...).

Kaffeine has always been my favorite player. It's quite good for playing DVDs in comparison to s/g/k/mplayer for instance.

I am not experiencing the behavior described by kbunt. Right now my only problem with it is that it doesn't seem to like setting "video driver to use" to "opengl". Returns: "Error: Can't init new Video Driver opengl - using xv!" which is strange because Gxine has no problems using it.

And yeah, Smplayer is great too, but I still prefer the xine back end over mplayer. Smplayer has nicer looking subtitles though

I have no issues with kaffeine.

If you go to another file always use the file > open..> if you use folder then it will open the first file in the folder opened. (if you see what I mean).

Use the toolbars option to get the best screen settings for you.

hey mudlark, that's what to do, using 'open file' allows it to work fine. Thanks! I guess I didn't realize what was going on.

Now, there is another issue. When I play a video file, for e.g., avi, I get a short green line at the bottom right corner of the frame. It is also showing strange behavior again as it doesn't always play the file I choose. It will play the previous file. This occurs even if I just choose, 'open...'

This is displayed whenever I go to full screen. This is in ver. 0.8.5. Doesn't anyone else get this? I can't find anyone mentioning similar behavior and I've googled 'green line in Kaffeine.' What else could I google?
