installing KDE 4 Release 2 in Kubuntu

I am wondering how you install KDE 4 Release 2 in Kubuntu. I followed a few other forums and i ran the sudo apt-get kde4base thing and it installed a bunch of packages but it still boots to 3.5.7..

How do you get Kubuntu to boot to KDE 4 i just wanna check out how it looks...

    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

You are not missing out on anything, really.

KDE 4 doesnt deserve the status Beta, its not even pre-alpha from what I have seen. Its horribly buggy and broken.

Now my experience is purely with the precompiled packages in Kubuntu, maybe the problem is purely the fault of those that make the packages for the repository. I really hope this is the case.

If you want the same experience, just follow tihs:

The funny thing was, the second alpha release worked better for me than the second beta has.

If you decide to go the route of adding it to your KDM sessions list, and running it from there, you should remember ctrl alt backspace to kill the x session and return to the KDM screen, in case your KDE4 beta 2 session is as frelled up as the one I get when I try to run it.

      Good luck.

No offense, but why are you trying to install KDE 4 if you're entirely new? This is definitely not a project for a newbie. I'm pretty familiar with Linux (started using it last September, but I learned fast), and I don't even want to try it.

You get about as far as most ppl that install it right get.

Gutsy gives me a 'failed to start kdeinit4' and just hangs there.

Feisty loads to the desktop, with nothing you can do, the taskbar has error bubbles on it, and nothing works except the clock.

This is what most people get with KDE4 right now, you are not missing out on anything, just hold out for a polished release.

alright.. well i will wait until it becomes final and they get some of the bugs out of it... maybe when it gets to the repos and i can run adept and get it that way.. at least i know with it being final i can hope that some of the bugs are out ...

Thank you all for your help..

I guess i am taken by all the cool gadgets and the looks of it.... (seen screenshots)... I've always liked KDE over Gnome, just because when i started with linux (few years ago) i've always used KDE.. (back in my Mandrake days).. I like ubuntu or Kubuntu the best out of all the distros out there. It seems the easiest to use..

It is in the repos, that site I linked to shows how to install it and set it up, based on the beta packages in the repos.

None of the goodies you see in the screen shots actually work (at least for everyone I talk to), but most of those (and more) can be done with the program called Super Karamba in the current KDE.

can't get it to work either
In the beginning there's the picture of the team I think then after a few seconds of loading it just returns back to the login screen. I really wanted to see the eye candy.

                        Anybody got it to work?

Hmm - i can run KDE4b3 in the Xephyr window, but if i try full session KDE4 dies and kills fglrx. Xorg.0.log tells:

(EE) fglrx(0): Failed to initialize UMM driver.
Tried with opensource Ati drivers, no joy.

                          Correction. Now it runs. ??

                          =>
I need to run KDE4 In the Xephyr window (It makes kde4 folder) then i can start KDE4 in full session mode.
