Compiz/Fusion - what does it actually DO?

I've been dual-booting for the last six or seven years, through incarnations of Mandrake that was, Feisty Fawn that is and Gutsy Gibbon or OpenSuse 10.3 64-bit that soon will be (on my box). One would have to be utterly dead not to be aware of the buzz surrounding Compiz/Compiz Fusion, but my question is a simple one: What's it for?

Many linux users seem to have a fixation on visually clever or "tricksy" desktops, but I'm interested in knowing if there are any practical, prosaic workaday advantages to compiz/fusion. Or is it all just eye candy? Are there compelling productivity gains from installing and using it, or does it just pretty up the desktop and drain system resources? I've been trawling various sites admiring screenshots, but so far the "gee whiz" factor hasn't impacted me yet. What am I missing? I'm running an Athlon XP64 with 2GB RAM and an Nvidia 7600GS, fwiw.

To me Compiz/Beryl is just bells and whistles. Something that you use in demos. But if someone is happy with those...

Thanks for that link. It confirms my thoughts, I think I can live without it.

Re: Compiz/Fusion - what does it actually DO?

I rather like the "cube" and being able to swap from desktop to desktop. I know that you can do that without Compiz, but I get a kick out of the desktop actually rotating smoothly to the new desktop instead of just "pop" there it is...

But if you don't need/want the eye candy, there's probably no really driving reason to use it...

In gutsy you can install compiz and have wobbly windows and a cube and much more i would consider is becasue it improves the eye-candy BETTER THAN VISTA so just try it out and fi you dont like it you can unisnatll it with a couple click of a mouse

          Hope this help

Re: Compiz/Fusion - what does it actually DO?

I believe that 3D's effect would work nice for evangelizing windows users to move to Linux, just for the eye candy. Switching the subject, I just upgraded my system last night, and I was wondering how to work Compiz fusion with KDE. I know it is integrated with Gnome but I hardly use it. Is there a guide that you guys might know. I was searching the web for that info and all I get are months old articles about it. I wish to have some recent guide line to go by. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Compiz/Fusion - what does it actually DO?

Interesting question. I guess I'd want to know how you define "integrate", in this context.

Basically, my 3 weeks of experimentation indicates that, with compiz enabled and running, you can still right-click the desktop and "configure desktop" and do pretty much everything that KDE ever offered you. You can also still right-click the panel and "configure panel" and do all of that stuff, same as before. So what's new with compiz is (is that a poem? ), you click Kmenu>Settings>Advanced Desktop Effects Settings and in that little swamp of critters you can do all kinds of fiddling with the "cube" and its myriad of skydomes, caps, sides, viewports, rotational modes, opacities, yada yada yada yada. And also if you install a "Window Decorator" like Emerald, then that also appears in the Kmenu>Settings folder now, and gives you whatever capabilities that it has to offer.

              Is that helpful?

Re: Compiz/Fusion - what does it actually DO?

Beryl/ Compiz is nice, and has some nice usability features not just eye candy. For example if you place the mouse cursor in the top right corner of the screen, all of the windows become visible in a tiled view and you can select one to give it focus, its very useful.

But be warned, from my experience (and the reason I cannot use it) is that its very buggy with a multiuser setup where you use the "Switch User" features in KDE and Gnome (having the other user have Compiz on, or off, doesnt make a difference). If you dont use multi users like that, more power to you, I would have it installed right now if I didnt.

That all depends on what you use your PC for.

I develop and use OpenGL based programs. So if a desktop is taking up the GPU and Video RAM, then its most definitely a drain on my resources.

I am not arguing against using it, I love it and would use it if it wasn't so buggy, resources be damned, I was just giving you a valid example of it being a resource drain.

Re: Compiz/Fusion - what does it actually DO?

I think this constantly ongoing argumentation is missing the point. I don't think we could have a poll or something to clear out if it's useful or not. The usefulness of Compiz-Fusion is not a democratic decision! The usefulness of it depends on who is using it and if the user can find ways to make it useful for oneself. I for example have made use of the cube in a way which I think makes it useful (and it's not to impress on windows users). I sort my running applications according to how I use them on each side of the cube. Fine you can do that without Compiz-Fusion too, but I find it a lot easier to navigate if I actually see the rotations. In cases when I have a lot of windows open I also find scaling very useful to navigate. Another "eye candy" thing I find very useful is the option to make windows opacify when I move the mouse away from it. It helps a lot when I'm writing essays for school (since I first scrabble down key points and notes in Kate first and then write the real thing off that).

My point is that Compiz-Fusions usefulness is in the eye of the beholder and the way they see it useful or not. Some may find it to be just eye candy while others (like me for instance) find it very useful. Bury the axe for once, please!

Re: Compiz/Fusion - what does it actually DO?

Compiz/Beryl is mostly eyecandy, but it does have some actually useful features.

The hotkeys that let you annotate on your screen can be useful when demonstrating things in tutorial videos using xvidcap. I think the cube is way more intuitive and easy to use than pager ever was.

The accessibility features are coming along too.

If you want rock-hard stability, pass on it for now. If you want bleeding edge coolness to show off to your friends, install it yesterday.

If you do install it, add a shortcut on your start menu that does "compiz --replace &" for the occasional situations where it might take a dirt-nap on you.

Thedeviljester, I do not know if it is that buggy, but I finally got Compiz to work and if you do not play a lot with it, it works perfect. I have been making some changes and that is why I know it has some bugs, but otherwise I would not even noticed. I do not know if you might want to try it, but it is good. :-p

It has serous issues that happen at random when switching users that makes it impossible to use.

The other bugs and crashes dont bother me, they are annoyances, nothing more.

But when I am doing something important on my PC, and the wife wants to use her account for a min, and then I switch back to my account, and its a white or black, unresponsive screen, thats 100% unusable. It does this if both accounts have Compiz on, or if just one does, it doesnt change a thing.

I would really love to use it, its awesome, but I just cannot.
