    Where is my program?

    Hi all you Linux experts.......

Being fairly new to Kubuntu (and Linux too for that matter) I have installed a Gnome program in my KDE world - Image Viewer - part of Eye of Gnome which looks fine.

I know that the program is there somewhere- but I can t find it.........
The reason I know it is there is that downloaded pictures open in it!

How can I find it and place in my dock?

By the way - is Imageviewer the best program to view pictures in best quality?

    Regards,

    Kjell

Have you checked (and double checked) all K Menus?

If it isn't there - add it:

    Package info
    Package eog
gutsy (gnome): Eye of Gnome graphics viewer program
    2.20.0-0ubuntu3: amd64 i386 powerpc
Can you start it in: Alt +F2 and type eog

    If yes:

    KDE menu editor
Highlight an item in the section of K-menu you want to edit and right click. A menu will appear, click "Edit Item" option and left click. KDE Menu Editor starts. Now you can add a new submenu or new program.

I don't know - i have never used it, using:

Package gwenview - image viewer for KDE
    Homepage: http://gwenview.sourceforge.net

    and

Package: kphotoalbum - tool for indexing, searching and viewing images by keywords for KDE. Homepage: http://kphotoalbum.org/

    Testing:
    KSquirrel
KSquirrel is an image viewer for KDE with disk navigator, file tree, multiple directory view, thumbnails, extended thumbnails, dynamic format support, DCOP interface, KEXIF and KIPI plugins support. Homepage: http://ksquirrel.sourceforge.net/

      Re: Where is my program?

Thanks for your answer - it solved my problem!

eog seems to me to show jpgs in screen size with better quality than the other programs I have tried in Kubuntu. I am not using the program to edit pictures, just to examine lots of jpgs.

I looked at your suggested link on KSquirrel but (as a Windows user for more than 20 years) I found the installation scaring. Way over my knowledge in Linux, so far. But I am learning......
Is there a manual somewhare on how to install these packages? In Ubuntu everything is much easer.

One final ignorant question: where are the programs actually located? The "eog.exe", for example?

Then it is "the best program" .

        Installing .deb's:
Download packages (.deb's) and in Dolphin:
Right click ksquirrel-libs_0.7.2-1etch_i386.deb > Open With > GDebi Package Installer.

        But KSquirrel
        http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show...?content=12317

Kubuntu Gutsy can use Debian Etch package (ksquirrel-0.7.2.deb) but it can't use ksquirrel-libs-0.7.2.deb. It will tell:

        Package: ksquirrel-libs
Status: Errorependency is not satisfiable: libjasper-1.701-1

        Gutsy has:
        libjasper1
        The JasPer JPEG-2000 runtime library
        Available versions: 1.900.1-3 (gutsy)

        Here is ksquirrel-libs_0.7.2-1_i386.deb:
        http://www.badongo.com/file/4586264
        Compiled in Kubuntu Gutsy.

        You also need:
        Gamin
        Package: gamin (0.1.8-2ubuntu1)
        File and directory monitoring system
        Package: libgamin0 (0.1.8-2ubuntu1)
Client library for the gamin file and directory monitoring system.

        If you don't have those:
ksquirrel: error while loading shared libraries: libfam.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

where are the programs actually located? The "eog.exe", for example?
        From: Linux's directory structure - 1.2
        http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/linuxdir.html
        < /bin, /usr/bin >

These two directories contain a lot of programs (binaries, hence the directory's name) for the system. The /bin directory contains the most important programs that the system needs to operate, such as the shells, ls, grep, and other essential things. /usr/bin in turn contains applications for the system's users. However, in some cases it really doesn't make much difference if you put the program in /bin or /usr/bin.
