You probably know that you can run gtk (gnome) programs in the kde.

Example:

7. Graphical configuration tool for X
(Hmm - probably this: displayconfig-gtk -Simple tool to change xserver settings)

displayconfig-gtk will install: python-cairo
python-glade2
python-gobject
python-gtk2
python-numeric

You can install it and run it in Kubuntu. You don't need full Gnome (Ubuntu desktop).

No 6 on the kubuntu list appears to be from ubuntu feisty.

Feisty has:

5. Firefox plugins in Ubuntu - if you have Firefox installed, you'll have this I think. Besides Konqueror has some, too

7. Graphical configuration tool for X - Nope. The programs is specifically GTK/GNOME for now. We probably will have it next release

You seem to have mixed some features that are either:
1. Available but not installed by default
2. Not GNOME/KDE-specific, that is, included in the base system

But yes, some in your list are indeed very specific to Ubuntu/GNOME only. You can try to install only those pieces, but installing ubuntu-desktop would probably be overkill. Your choice though.

I think he was looking at the new features list for Ubuntu & Kubuntu in their Gutsy release notes.

But Ubuntu lists even non-Ubuntu-only features, notably those at the bottom are true for both. And for some of those, Kubuntu also has corresponding features.

As for the Firefox plugin, since Edgy, Konqueror had a script that downloads and installs Flash for the user (although only for that user if I remember correctly).

Btw, we couldn't include Compiz Fusion by default because of it's broken integration with KDE.

It's basically a more defined access control tool, more than what the current read/write/execute per user/group offers. I think...

I haven't used it at all.

Thank you Rog131 and others. I see that as an example Kubuntu restricted extras differs from that offfered with ubunutu- although there is a common core.

Having installed kubuntu fiesty you could run ubuntu restriced extras to get that common core if you knew to do it. If you didnt know, you simply had one less feature than ubuntu users. I assume the same might apply to the automatic downloading of codecs.

What i would really love is a set of instructions which allow kubuntu users to get hold of the latest features added to ubuntu in the way Rog131 pointed out for '7. Graphical configuration tool for X'. If some one could go through the list and point out how people starting from kubuntu could get the features from ubuntu they wished, just as roger showed did for the one example, then i and others could safely recommend kubuntu every time and give the url to anyone wanting one of these features. This would make the choice of KDE a 'no lose' choice!!

Granted some may not be available- e.g. compiz by default- but at least it would be good to understand that. Some others are irrelevant under KDE- i simply included the lists as quoted in the release notes. Again - irrelevant or already available via .... would be good answers to have.

If you open Adept and search "ubuntu-standard", right-click it and choose "Request Reinstall", it will install all applicable additions from the Ubuntu release in Kubuntu (just figured that out last night

).

As far as AppArmor goes, here's an excerpt from it's doc:

AppArmor protects systems from insecure or untrusted precesses by running them in confinement, still allowing them to share files with other parts of the system, exercising privilege, and communicating with other processes, but with some restrictions. These restrictions are mandatory; they are not bound to identity, group membership, or object ownership. In particular, the restrictions also apply to processes running with superuser privileges. AppArmor achieves this by plugging into the Linux Security Module (LSM) framework. The protections provided are in addition to the kernel's regular access control mechanisms.

Summary

This specification describes a new failsafe mode that will be used if X fails to start up. It will be in a reduced (VESA 800x600/256 or VGA 640x480/16) graphics environment running a single application (displayconfig-gtk) for configuring the graphics devices.

The goal of this specification is to eliminate the need for users to need to run apt-get reconfigure on the commandline. That approach is confusing and too technical for many users, so moving away from that will solve a key pain point for users.

KDM Failsafe Server

KDM currently does not support a failsafe server as GDM does, so support for this capability on KDM-based distros will be deferred until this has been implemented. Assuming a design similar to GDM is adopted, the above design can be used here as well.

Yes this is the same reason given to me when I asked some devs about Bulletproof X on KDE. Basically KDE doesn't support it yet. I don't know if KDE 3.5 will ever support it though, since most new features are only put into KDE 4.

We'll have to see...

While poking around at Phoronix, I came across Michael Larabel's blog post on BulletProofX. He doesn't think it's very good (and I'm somewhat inclined to agree with him).

Thought an opposing viewpoint would be nice to have...

) is good but It would be nice, as Michael Larabel says:

The Ctrl-Alt-Backspace key combination currently "zaps" (hard-restarts) the X server, and thus loses any unsaved data in applications, etc. This key combination is also largely undocumented, so users (probably ex-Windows users) may press this key combination without expecting data loss. This spec covers discussion over either disabling this key combination by default, or documenting it more explicitly.

Here is an example of something there must be an easy way to borrow from ubuntu. I have a canon MP780 printer. Try to install under kubuntu- no driver. Install ubuntu desktop, install under ubuntu= no problem. Log back into kubuntu = printer installed.

But there must be an easier way than installing the whole ubuntu desktop.
