    nvidia-settings & Gutsy???

Has anybody gotten nvidia-settings to work with Gutsy yet?

Yes. It worked straight away, I didn't have to do anything. I'm using the version that is included with nvidia-glx-new not the stand alone version.

Yep. I used Envy to install the newest driver, tweaked as per the 29 July post on this blog:

      http://albertomilone.com/wordpress/?m=200707

      Worked great.

Then, once the driver is installed,
      Code:
      sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
to overwrite the xorg.conf file. Restart X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and it's ready for
      Code:
      sudo nvidia-settings
to set the default resolution and refresh rates.

        Re: nvidia-settings & Gutsy

Every time I try to open nvidia-settings, a popup box gives me the attached error message:

        I've already run nvidia-xconfig; what's the deal?

          Re: nvidia-settings & Gutsy

I would accept the message as being the truth.

Can you exit the GUI, with Ctrl-Alt-F1, and then shut down kdm with a command that I'll have to look up. Ah
          Code:
          sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
          Now run
          Code:
          sudo envy -t
If you modified the Envy file to add "Gutsy" as per Mr. Milone's blog, you should see the Envy script installer run correctly, and at the end it will write an xorg.conf file for you, and then you can restart the login server with
          Code:
          sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart
and you should see the Nvidia splash screen and then a GUI login.

          Let us know ...

            Re: nvidia-settings & Gutsy

I swapped 'gutsy' for 'cassandra' as you said before and had uninstalled the old driver and installed the new one with Envy, before, and followed your instructions on this post, again, and it's still giving me the same message. It's also telling me direct rendering is not enabled. The Nvidia splash screen does show before the KDM login screen appears, and my xorg.conf file shows I'm using the nvidia driver

              Re: nvidia-settings & Gutsy

There are two "Device" stanzas in your xorg.conf file for some reason. It would appear the second one is not the one you want to use. Why you try commenting out every line of that one (the one that has the "nv" driver) by inserting a preceding "#" in front of each line. Save it, and restart the X server. No guarantees -- it's just a troubleshooting notion.

Aaahhhh -- wait -- I see further confusion. Under the first Section Screen, the one identified as "default" looks like the one you want, but further down is a second one that you don't want. So comment out the second one too, the one that starts with Identifier as "screen 1".

Here's a real clean section of an xorg.conf file:

                  Re: nvidia-settings & Gutsy

If you are running compiz, it has probably switched out the rendering driver for XGL, so, although the NVidia driver is being used, it is XGL that is running on it and therefore nvidia-settings does not work. I have the same message when I try to run nvidia-settings since I installed xgl to run compiz. I dont mind too much though as I got the screen set up as I wanted before I installed compiz.

My laptop has an intel GM945 card. I have noted from adept that nvidia kernel common has been installed. Can anyone tell me whether this is actually required please?

                      Thanks

This is my Xorg if you need it for comparison. As I have the same issue you might find something common:

                          Re: nvidia-settings & Gutsy

I've a laptop too, also using the 945GM:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
Just checked Adept, and yes, the nvidia-kernel-common package is installed. Don't have clue why, as I (and you) aren't using an Nvidia video card/driver - we have the Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller.

My guess, is that this package is simply part of the basic set of packages that gets installed. A simple test is to uninstall it and see what happens. It can always be reinstalled if it's absence creates problems.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

                            @integr8e, that looks much better.

One question, the vertical refresh rate up to 160Hz looks very high -- can your monitor or CRT really do that? Bad stuff happens when you try to drive outside the true spec limits -- I'd double-check that one.

@Uber Nooblet -- At one time I installed the xserver-xgl package, thinking it must be needed for Compiz. I was wrong -- with the Nvidia driver you don't need it at all. It is not installed now and compiz works pretty well here.

And yes, I have every xserver-xorg-video-*** driver in Adept installed. I don't know why Gutsy does that, but it seems harmless so I'm leaving it alone. It's obvious from the splash screen and the performance that the Nvidia driver is the one actually doing the job.
