    strigidaemon Alert!

    I'm going to post this under Gutsy, although I don't know for a fact that the problem is limited to Gutsy.

    12 hours after last evening's Gutsy updates, I checked my (theoretically) idling desktop system and was alarmed to discover that the CPU cores were at 55 and 65 degrees C, with fans running full out. A little investigation of running processes revealed that "strigidaemon" was consuming 100% of the user session resources.

    A quick check on Launchpad indicates that one person beat me to the bug report, but he reported that it is eating all his root filesystem disk space. So I added a report about the CPU capacity consumption.

    That's the news. >

    Trying strigi in the Feisty. Status is idling but Cpu load is 90 - 100 %.

    Main features:
    * very fast crawling
    * very small memory footprint
    * no hammering of the system

      It's not obvious to me how to set the strigi daemon to NOT start automatically -- I looked at System Services and the Service Manager, and I don't see it.

        Re: strigidaemon Alert!

        I am getting 95% user rescourses

        When I kill it from the systray it stays at 90% persistent little bugger :P

        Edit: I just uninstalled it. Period, bye, good riddance, adios, chiao.

        My konqueror is behaving as well for now. Could be related.

          Thanks for the warning dibl, after your warning, I completely disabled strigi and now everything is rosy! I was wondering why Konqueror and Kontact kept crashing and acting strange! Have now installed kerri beagle instead (not that I have used a search but you never know and that is okay.)
          So again, thanks for the warning!

            Yep, I just un-installed it -- I didn't install it deliberately in the first place. I think it was a "gift" with Gutsy.

            Closest thing to a virus I've seen in Linux!

              Yes this has set me thinking about the way we have liittle control over what packages and programs get installed!! None of us actually requested this package and therefore its complications, it is only thanks to you dibl that we are aware of the problems with it! (I certainly would not have cottoned on to it certainly not so soon as being the culprit causing crashes in Konqueror or the funny pop up messages I was getting in Kontact!

                    Well, in comparison to my 20 years as a MS-DOS and Windows user, and especially since Win 95 was foisted upon the world, I would have to say that *buntu Linux users actually have near TOTAL control of what is installed, although your point about the default package combination is valid. I think we have to trust Canonical to make reasonable judgments regarding what combination of packages they will include on that 1 distribution CD that they have to use. They're human beings, after all, and the occasional human slip-up can be expected. In Feisty, for example, they chose to dump the Epson printer drivers, to save CD space I suppose. That was a cause of some consternation for us Epson owners, but once the work-around was understood, it's no big deal.

                    I'll never forget the Gateway 2000 computer I bought back in 1997 with Win 95 pre-installed. It had the most amazing load of unwanted junk popping up trying to get me to subscribe to things I wasn't interested in -- AOL, MSN, ant-virus programs, yadda yadda yadda -- unbelievable! I doubt I ever got them all un-installed completely. So that's my comparison point to Kubuntu -- this strigi thing is a disappointment, but I imagine there's a guy working overtime at Canonical to fix it, because it's not their usual style to let something like that out of its cage.

                        Have just rid my system of it too. Beyond the CPU usage it had created an index of 1069MB on my laptop and seemed almost completely unconfigurable.

                          Um yes, I only had a 8Gb space with 2 left after the Gutsy upgrade. Within a day or two my drive was full (indexed remote disk) with no warnings either! (another needed thing).

                          It was easy to find the culprit and quickly removed.
                          Beagle still does an adequate job. IMO

                            It seemed very limited so I removed it. I can find the stuff I need by locate (or rarely by kfind) anyway.

                              Re: strigidaemon Alert!

                              so strigi isn't any better than google desktop search. the index files are huge and i don't have any idea where the files are kept. unnecessary filetypes get indexed and add to the index size. cpu usage percentage goes up to 77% and beyond, but what i worry more about is the disk space it is gobbling up. kubuntu gutsy doesn't have the Find Files and Folders option in the Kmenu (they thought strigi would suffice) and I always keep forgetting the find/locate command syntax.

                              I don't think strigi has bad intention but just bad oversized indexes and indexing process.

                              Thanks in advance.
