    KDE 4.0

    Hi,
I see that KDE 4.0 won't make Gutsy because it's only coming out in December. I was wondering if Kubuntu will automatically upgrade when the new version is released or will we have to wait for Hardy Heron?
    Thanks
    Richard

    KDE 4

Keep packaging KDE 4 releases as they are made. The target release for Gutsy should be KDE 4.0 rc 2. Packages will need to still be installed into /usr/lib/kde4 unless there are improvements upstream with renaming kdelibs binaries or moving them to libexec. Qt 4.3 is expected around July which makes it fit into the Gutsy release schedule nicely. If it is delayed we should request an upstream version freeze as it is required by KDE 4. KDE 4.0 final is due to be released one week after Gutsy, we should make packages available on the day of release and create an unsupported remastered Gutsy Live CD with the KDE 4 packages hosted on kubuntu.org.

We should set the local KDE configuration files directory to ~/.kde4 at compile time to stop it overwriting KDE 3 configuration without an environment variable needing to be set. We should add /usr/lib/kde4 to the PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH in KDE 3 sessions to make KDE 4 apps easy to run on KDE 3.

    Kubuntu and KDE 4

The first news in this talk was that Kubuntu will not ship with KDE 4 as the default version for the next two (!) Kubuntu reasons. This is due to the fact that the next version of Kubuntu, Gutsy, will not include KDE 4 because it will not be ready till then. The version after Gutsy would be totally perfect for KDE 4, however, this version will be a Long Time Support version. These specific Ubuntu versions are released every 18 24 months and aim at long term stability. Therefore they only include packages which are already in a pretty stable and reliable state. And Jonathan Riddell mentioned that he does not believe that KDE 4 will reach that state that far.

Hello, have anyone tried KDE 4 beta 2 packages? I tried, but the KDE 4 session does not start, it seems that packages are broken.
