I got an old laptop I.E. a throw away dell from a friend and I want to load up kubuntu onto it. The thing is that I want to be able to run a wifi card on it and I've heard about the problems users have been having. Does anyone know about a list of compatible wifi cards that wouldn't require a bunch of computer knowledge to get working? From what I've read wlassistant is the best bet for getting connected so far. I really want to be able to use this laptop on public connections.

Re: Wifi cards....
Do you have any specs on your "throw away Dell"? If it's really old, you may have a PC CARD slot, instead of CARDBUS; and that makes a difference. If it's only moderately old and has some decent specs, you can get most of them running wifi with wicd or nidswrapper or even fw-cutter, depending on the wifi chip in the card - hopefully with WPA1/2 and a wpa_supplicant package.
But first, the machine specs. The next brick house on the left
