Remotely access a Windows XP Home Computer from Kubuntu 7.10 via Internet

I have seen lots of different posts about remote desktop access, but they all go in different directions or leave out details of the process etc. Could a nice Linux guru take a few minutes to provide a step by step process for setting up a remote desktop connection between a Windows XP Home computer (the host) and a Kubuntu 7.10 computer (client) via the internet.
I would like to use TightVNC on the Host (Win XP Home) and Krdc on the Kubuntu Linux Client. (if possible).

Current configuration is both systems are on DSL connection through DSL modems that act as routers as well as wireless access points. The two computers are both hardwired into the modems as the primary system behind the modem.

Example purpose of connection is to assist my family at a remote location with their Windows XP machine from my home on my Linux machine.

Remote Desktop is not included in XP Home Edition. You need XP Professional.

my understanding is that is what you use TightVNC for. TightVNC gets you around the fact of not having remote desktop server in XP Home. (At least That is my understanding)

I have UltraVNC installed on a Vista machine and a WinXP machine. I can access both of them from my Kubuntu machine with TightVNC. Works great. The Vista machine was somewhat problematic requiring a lot of security tweaks to open it up a bit.

do you have to use tightvnc on the linux end of the setup, or can you use the krdc (remote desktop connection) that is built into Kubuntu?

Krdc is what you would use as the client. Use 'vnc://hostnameort' to connect to VNC. You can also use it for XP Pro's remote desktop by using 'rdp://hostnameort'

sorry.. i'm a noobie.... could you give a more detailed example of what to enter and where? I install tightVNC on the windows Xp machine and launch a VNC server session there right? Then I take down the IP information from the windows machine right? then I go back to my Linux machine and open krdc, right? then I do what?

Am i following you correctly? I hope I'm not completely lost.
