Realtek network card does not work in Kubuntu 7.10

    Hello

I am having this problem since update to Feisty and also in Gutsy. I have a Realtek ethernet card which does not want to work. I am experiencing this problem on two computers with RTL card, both at home and in work. It seems to be some hardware specific problem, cause other computers with different cards work fine. Is there any workaround for this problem? Somewhere I read that that it is necessary to recompile the RTL card driver, but don't know how.

This seems to be an ongoing problem with the Ubuntu/Kubuntu distribution. I had everything working fine back in version 6.04 (I think that's right), and since then it's broken. So I did some investigating to see if there was something wrong with the 2 network adapters I have (Zonenet/rl2500 and a Belkin), or is there something wrong with the distribution.

One test I tried was to boot the LIVE CD for various distributions and see if I could connect. If I could connect then I would install and try the distribution. Here are the results:

Mandriva 2008 - Worked right out of the box, works every time (just like Windoze).
Fedora 3 - Worked fine, installed ok on single cpu machines, some difficulty with IRQ management with dual core processors.
    PCLinux 2007 - Works fine
    SUSE 10.3 - doesn't work
    Kubuntu versions over 6.04 - doesn't work.

I posted topics about this issue over a year ago and all I ever read was other members complaining that they had the same difficulty. I have been extremely patient and persistent in resolving the difficulty and hopefully, after finding a solution, was going to post here to help other members. My conclusion is that you should not hold your breath waiting for a solution. Try the Mandriva.
