marvell 88e8036 (sky2) stopped working after update - SOLVED

I lost the hard-drive in my laptop and had to reinstall Linux. Wired networking worked fine (as long as I include the irqpoll option in grub) when I installed and on the first boot AFTER install. I then let the system update all of the outdated packages (over 100). After rebooting my system, I now have no networking. It times out when trying to get a DHCP address.

The sky2 module is loaded, I even tried unloading and restarting it, no luck.

The only strange thing I see is that if I run ethtool, its showing "no" for Link detected, even though the laptop does have a link light displayed on the port itself.

Guess is that among the 'over 100' packages that got updated, at least one was a kernel update. Have you checked your /boot/grub/menu.lst yet? If you aren't including the irqpoll option in the # defoptions= section, your updated kernel line won't have it.
