Wireless card enabled, but no interface

I installed the firmware, but I had trouble because I had problems updating my Kubuntu through Adept manager. After I updated it through the konsole: I was able to install the firmware. Finally, I went ahead and extracted the bcmwl5.sys, and then I could enable my wireless card. Before, I wasn't able to. I restart the computer a couple of times, checking to see if I am able to scan for networks, but it won't even let me click on the network button in Knetworkmanager. Please help me. I already sent something on Launchpad. I hope this will work. These forums seem pretty short of people compared to the Ubuntu one. Thanks a lot.

Your right, there is a lot more traffic on ubuntu, but I think we can help you sort this out. I assume that you have some type of 54G wireless card. The downside of using the kernel driver is that you will only get 11Mbs out of your 54G card. You will get better performance with ndiswrapper. If you execute the following command you can find out which Broadcom device you have.

lspci -v | grep Broadcom

If you follow these instructions, you should be in good shape.

Unless you are using wpa, don't complete the last command in Step 3.

DO NOT COMPILE NDISWRAPPER FROM SOURCE. If the instructions don't work, that is not the problem. Follow the instructions to the letter and I will be glad to assist you further if that doesn't work for you. Post any errors.

Hopefully your computer also has a wired connection that you can use to download. If not, you will need the alternate CD or better yet the DVD. Once you get connected, I would suggest that you replace k/networkmanager with wicd. You will save yourself a lot of heartache and frustration. You can find more info here:

Ok, I blacklisted the driver and now I don't have internet. I was on the internet using wired mode. I tried downloading the .exe files with wget and it said that service was not known, I think because I blacklisted the bcm.

Nevermind that. When I installed wicd, it shut my network off. I was able to all the steps except the one you told me not to do, I didn't do the last step of 3.

I rebooted the computer.

Still no wireless networks found. Should I use WPA supplicant? (the last command of 3)

I can't tell you whether you need WEP or WPA, that depends on your router configuration. If you completed all of the steps in the howto, the go to K>System Settings>Network Settings. Click the Adminstrator Mode button and enter your password. Is you wireless adapter listed there? You should have two interfaces. If you wireless adapter is listed there, click on it and click Configure Interface. Check the button Automatic/dhcp and the checkbox for Activate when the computer starts. Enter you ESSID and click OK and Apply. It should come up with an IP address. If not, check your wired connection with similar (except ESSID) and see if you can get it going.
