Network connection lost after upgrading to Kubuntu 7.10

    Hi,

I'm running Kubuntu under VMware | Windows XP.

I recently updated to Kubuntu 7.10. Before, I was using Kubuntu 6.10 without any problems. All was running extremely smooth for months.

After the update, I don't have a network connection any more. The following symbol is shown in the task bar: see attached image "symbolnonetwork.png".

When clicking on the symbol, I get the following information: see attached image "connectionstatus.png".

However, when I do an lspci | grep -i net, I get the following information:
    geertvc@LinGevaWare:~$ lspci | grep -i net
00:11.0 Ethernet controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] 79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE] (rev 10)
So, apparently the network card is still detected.

Running ifconfig gives me the following information:

    geertvc@LinGevaWare:~$ ifconfig
    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C:29:44:23:BE
    inet6 addr: fe80::20c:29ff:fe44:23be/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets:23 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:3559 (3.4 KB) TX bytes:2304 (2.2 KB)
    Interrupt:17 Base address:0x1400
    lo Link encap:Local Loopback
    inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
    inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
    UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
As one can see, no IP address is given to eth0 (should normally be 192.168.123.174, set by the DHCP server in the router).

I've tried different things like ifup/down eth0, trying to restart the network and so on, but so far without any success.

    Anyone faced the same problem?

I have found that sometimes it just takes a kick start to get things going. The first thing I would do is go to a console and do the following:

    sudo ifdown eth0
    sudo ifup eth0

If that didn't do it, did you get any errors? My experience is that if that works it will work automagically afterwards.

That is what I've tried already a couple of times, but without success.

I'm also sure it has nothing to do with the rest of the infrastructure (router etc.), since I also installed Kubuntu 7.10 (a fresh installation, directly from the iso file, not via the upgrade way of working) on a new harddisk -also under the same VMware app- without any problems at all.

The problem I'm facing is something that must have happened during the upgrade process, but I don't know where exactly...

I could use the new installation, of course, but there are a few important files which I would not like to lose. And next to this, there must be a cause of the problem: it would be interesting (and important) to know exactly what it was...

      If I get any errors?

Well, next to the one given by KNetworkManager (see original post), I get the following when trying to ping to my router:

      geertvc@LinGevaWare:~$ ping 192.168.123.254
      connect: Network is unreachable
Are there any other commands I should run to see for extra information? Pls. let me know...

Also, I've attached screen shots from the Network Settings in System Settings (started up as "sudo systemsettings", otherwise you can't do/select anything...):
      • network_interface.png
      • configure_eth0.png
      • domain_name_system.png

And this is what I get when I execute the command ipconfig under WindowsXp (Dutch):

      C:\Documents and Settings\Geert Vancompernolle>ipconfig

If you manually input the nameservers, I would delete those. Do you have link/activity lights? I am still researching. So far I can't find anyone else who is having a problem. Can you check your VM settings?

Well, I didn't put anything manually regarding the nameservers, but I've deleted them as per your device, but that doesn't seem to help me a lot.

Regarding the link/activity lights, can't see anything reacting on my router (since pinging to the router address is giving me an error, I think it's normal I don't see any lights flashing on my router itself...)

Regarding VMware itself: the hardware settings of the ethernet controller tells me it's bridged. That's all I can see wrt VMware itself.

I would like to re-install VMware tools, but the compilation fails on the fact that it can't find the locations of the C header files.
Will have to look for the cause of this...

According to my research that card works out of the box. If it is working in Windows and not in Kubuntu the problem is with VMWare. I don't run it anymore as I went to VirtualBox, so hopefully someone who runs VMW can help.

              Hello Geert
Have you tried to check your /etc/network/interfaces file as i had a similar problem with my connection. After I checked mine i found a line missing,
auto eth0, after i added this line, everything worked. not sure if it will solve your problem, but could be worth a try

                Hi Uli,

This is the content of my /etc/network/interfaces file:

                geertvc@LinGevaWare:/media$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
                auto lo
                iface lo inet loopback
                address 127.0.0.1
                netmask 255.0.0.0

                auto eth0
                iface eth0 inet dhcp
As you can see, eth0 is defined...

But what I see is, when I do an ifconfig, I get an inet6 IP address. God knows where this is coming from...

This is the result of ifconfig (see the red line in the listing):

                geertvc@LinGevaWare:/media$ ifconfig
                eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C:29:44:23:BE

                RX bytes:34216 (33.4 KB) TX bytes:34216 (33.4 KB)
Still remains a complete mystery, but anyway thanks for your suggestion!

I have the same problem problem after I have upgraded from 7.04 to 7.10. I am running Linux alone on a old Compaq AP200 computer. I have tried the

                  sudo ifdown eth0
                  sudo ifup eth0

commands, but still no joy. I don't know what to do.

Doing a clean install from CD is not an option, because I have downloaded a few additional applications which are not part of the LiveCD. I do not want to do a clean install everytime I want to upgrade and download all my extra applications again.

Well, I have not been able to repair my problem. The only way out I had was starting from scratch on a new harddisk, taking the downloaded .iso file for the version 7.10

I'm afraid this will be the only way out, unless someone in the community still has some ideas?

I am having a similar problem. My old install on the dual boot WinXP, Kubuntu system worked flawlessly for months. After upgrading to 7.10 connecting to my network is a sometimes thing. By that I mean that sometimes it will connect and remain connected but at other times I will have to restart the system several times to get a connection. I will dry the eth0 up and down thing. Maybe that will help.

Update: The ifup and ifdown did not help. It seems that there is a connection when the desktop first boots up. Sometimes I can get Firefox running and do a few things and then it drops out. Sometimes it persists for hours. I have checked all of the settings in the Knetwork Manager and they seem to be correct. I know very little about networking and am also a novice at Linux. I did enjoy it a lot until I upgraded and now have this non persistent network connection. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can provide.

                          geertvc@LinGevaWare:/media$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
                          auto lo
                          iface lo inet loopback
                          address 127.0.0.1
                          netmask 255.0.0.0

                          auto eth0
                          iface eth0 inet dhcp
From my experience KNetworkManager gives /etc/netword/interfaces precedence and doesn't actually change anything if the network interface is specified. Try
                          geertvc@LinGevaWare:/media$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
                          auto lo
                          iface lo inet loopback
                          address 127.0.0.1
                          netmask 255.0.0.0

                          #auto eth0
                          #iface eth0 inet dhcp
and reboot. See if this helps. It has resolved other slightly similar problems for me.

Still unpredictable. I have to reboot often to get a stable connection. Gateway IP seems to disappear and revert back to 0.0.0.0 Don't know if that is significant or not.
