Note: I also ran the "testparm -s" command to simplify the smb.conf file - I doubt that fixed anything though.

gilf - not quite yet! I cannot figure out why nmbd is not running on those 2 units. I installed one of them from a 7.10 released DVD. The other problem machine was a 7.04 install where Adept got broken - since I had not found out the magic characters to fix that yet, it was not upgraded until the full 7.10 release was out.

The unit where nmbd IS running was installed from a beta 7.10, and did a lot of upgrades. I suspect that may be the difference, and that something may be broken in the released stuff.

I had managed to get file sharing working both ways under v7.04 with the WinXp machines on my network, but this no longer works. I tried copying and old smb.conf file that worked previously, but no joy. Does anyone know which random text strings I need to type in which obscure file to make it work this time?

I'd appreciate if anyone who has worked it out could give me a clue.

I also have the same or similar problem. I am no longer able to access the shares on the WinXP machines on my system via Samba. Although they're configured to allow anyone on the LAN to access their drives via the NetBEUI protocol (there to allow my older OS/2 machines to also talk to WinXP drives), K7.10 is unable to access them. I suspect that Windows may be asking for a password since the connection is coming in on other than NetBEUI. I can however access another Samba share, my SimpleShare 500G Network File server which requires no password.

I see no option in the GUI to supply a password. What to do??

Well, I was sent off course trying to figure this out, apparently because the nmb component of Samba was not running on two machines I was trying to diagnose. I would try using the smb.conf file I posted last. Also, install SWAT and make sure that nmb is running.

Another member has been posting about problems with their SAMBA configuration, and another member pointed out that the trailing / in the path for the shared folder was syntactically incorrect (if folder cmf is the shared folder under /home) and to remove it.

Might this be the case here?

I did not realize that - however, it is working fine on the machines where nmb is running. I do not pretend to have understood all that nmb is supposed to do, however it was enough to read that it is one of the main parts of samba, so not having it would seem to be an issue.

If the trailing slash is incorrect, I will stop using it.
