external network access for ssh, ftp, http, etc

hi! for some reason I can't get external port access on my new kubunto 7.10 install (worked great with 5s, 6s, and 7.04). if I map my ports using 'nmap localhost' I can see them, but if I nmap using my IP address everything is closed. I can't seem to find anywhere to enable access - other than 'hosts.allow' and in there I put ALL: ALL but that didn't help...

does anybody know what I'm missing?
