Samba Woes

Well I'll have to say samba in Gusty is not ready for prime time IMO (Will it ever be?). I will say XP shares were visible immediately upon install with no configuration. A good thing. However Kubuntu shares aren't working and I cannot get the shared printer (on XP box) to work.

On the kubuntu shares, the share folder shows up on the XP box but I cannot get into it.
I have my /home/user folder shared. What's strange is that in Dolphin when I go to network/samba shares/networkname/userfolder dolphin complains "The file or folder smb://server/user does not exist". What the hay? I did notice when I looked at smb.cnf in Kate, changes I'd made in the samba setup in System Settings and Kcontrol were not saved so I changed it manually.

On the printer, I followed the steps in this post which worked a charm in both Edgy and Feisty.

I have to totally agree with the original poster. Samba in Kubuntu is a horribly screwed up mess. I'm using 7.10 and have tried on several systems to make this work. Every time I end up having to screw around with manually editing the config files and digging around for solutions all over the Internet, none of which works completely right.
Please fix this hairball although as bad as it is I can't imagine an update being capable of repairing the inevitable mess a user system will have after they desperately try to get this working right. Its an embarrassment.

First of all samba is not installed by default. So even it may seem stupid, if you haven't installed it install. A search in adept or synaptic should do it.

Second for some reason smb.conf with the new samba wants force use if you are not defining users and passwords, which I don't on my stand alone Linuxes / vmaware winxp guest machine.

Here is my smb.configue as a reference:

[global]

workgroup = YOURWORKGROUP
interfaces = eth0
map to guest = bad user

[Data]

path = /Data
read only = no
guest ok = yes
case sensitive = no
strict locking = no
force user = yourusername

[HP4200]

printing = cups
path = /var/tmp
printable = yes
guest ok = yes
guest only = yes

You can of course extrapolate from that.

Well thanks for the effort to help Fintan but that doesn't make any sense to me. That looks nothing like my smb.conf file. Maybe you could elaborate? (With emphasis on the printing) I did finally get the XP shares visible from gutsy. I just reinstalled samba about 3 times and it worked somehow. However, I cannot get gutsy to print to a shared printer for love nor money. I've tried it with kconfig and by logging into cups directly with firefox. I get this error log.

Linux Mint (dual boot with gutsy) found my printer without me having to do a thing. I went to add it and it was already there. Would that Kubuntu was so easy.

I notice the samba version in gutsy is 3.0.26a. Is that an alpha? Why would they use an alpha in a release? As screwy as samba was in feisty was at least it worked.

Hi guys,

I've spent three days on this after an install of Gutsy/Kubuntu. I'm going through exactly the same thing: I'm trying to browse my network, I can see the XP machine and its shares, but when I click on them through any access program (Konqurer, Dolphin, etc.), I get "file or folder does not exist."

I am pretty new to Kubuntu and I love it --- except for this. If I can't browse, I can't print to shared printers.

I have made a copy of my smb.conf file and altered it according to the directions above. Now I find I am unable to save it in the /etc/samba directory no matter what I name it. Ok, what's up?

Ye Gods, what wrath have you in store for me?

The shared printer problem may be the result of a bug about permissions for /dev/lp0. See this post for more info. Using the info here helped me get mine working.

If you have a firewall program installed, like Guard Dog or Firestarter check to be sure port 631 is open.
