Re: I cant Connect Wireless Network in Gutsy
did you try running the iwconfig command. Try posting it and I am sure someone will give you a hand. Was the wireless working before? If it was, did it change because of a system upgrade? if it was not a system upgrade and you know that the wireless is not working you might want to try ndiswrapper. Let us know

Re: I cant Connect Wireless Network in Gutsy
Same here!
Yesterday I installed Kubuntu 7.10. My BC43xx wasn't working, so i installed it with ndiswrapper (got the instructions from: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...eisty_No-Fluff).
After installation & reboot, I could see various wireless lan's, but when I tried connecting, it didn't work (I have my own WL with wep security enabeled. It does work when I use XP or my Sony PSP) The connection progress stopped at 28% and didn't continue.
This morning, I couldn't see any WL's.
Here's the info that iwconfig provided:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
irda0 no wireless extensions.
eth1 IEEE 802.11g ESSIDff/any
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated

Please help mie!

Re: I cant Connect Wireless Network in Gutsy
You might not need ndiswrapper depending on your card and chipset version.
Check this site. It is for Gentoo but it has some interesting info and an explanation on how to figure out your card's chipset:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_BCM43xx
I would also try at the command line: dmesg | grep bcm43xx
Also, make sure you checked out this site:
http://bcm43xx.berlios.de/?go=devices
There are a number of 'Ubuntu' sites for the bcm43xx driver.
Google 'bcm43xx and Kubuntu' or any combination of words featuring bcm43xx, Kubuntu, linux etc.. Some people used 'fwcutter' to install firmware to the directory /lib/firmware and then used an installation GUI. I would try to see if the driver is pre-compiled into the kernel and try native drivers to see if the card responds before resorting to ndiswrapper.
There are howtos out there for ndiswrapper and bcm43xx, though. However, I have never tried to get wireless to work with it so I have no instructions or explanations regarding that.

Re: I cant Connect Wireless Network in Gutsy
On the other hand, when I first began using the wireless tools on Linux I was disappointed because I did not know how to use it. Now, I can not live without it. If you are reading the wireless network on you area you got your card working. You just need to know how to connect your card to the router. Do this, right click on knetwork manager icon on the bottom right. Then, choose the wireless network that you would like to connect. I will have to assume that it is encrypted so you would see a label on your left hand side saying "Encryption:" to the right you are going to find a combo box saying: "WEP Passphrase. Click on the triangle pointing down and choose the option that says: "WEP 40/104-bit ASCII". After that click the box that says: "show credentials". After you are done with that on the left side of that box there is a text box that says: "Key", type the key to have access to the network. you should see the wireless going all the way up to 100. Make sure that the wireless is not disable by right clicking the icon and choosing option or is not in the chip is not offset by doing the same thing.
One time I had a similar problem, my card was working before and it stop working. I had to reinstall my ndiswraper and driver and it would not work. After a couple of days I realize that I have turned my wireless chip of by pressing function+f2. after I did that again the wireless began to work. If that does not work try what the previous comrade wrote. I hope it works

Re: I cant Connect Wireless Network in Gutsy
Yes you do need ndiswrapper if you want 54mbps. Using the kernel driver will only get you 11mbps. I imagine that you still need to blacklist the kernel driver. Try the following:
kdesu kate /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
If it is not already there, add the following at the bottom:
blacklist bcm43xx
Good luck.

Re: I cant Connect Wireless Network in Gutsy
I got exactly the same problem ... It find's the accesspoint , it asks for passwd and then a bar that goes up to 28% appears ... after a long while the bar dissaperes. No connection is established.
Here comes the wierd part, it works great under XP, Vista and Ubuntu gutsy (7.10) ... no problems at all there , so it really looks like a bug in kubuntu.
I'm using the restricted drivers, after I downloaded bcm43xx_fwcutter from Adept , the rest happened by it self. I have the drivers enabled and ready.
I'm sitting on the floor in the hall way wired up to my router hoping for a good soul to have the magic answer soon =) .

Re: I cant Connect Wireless Network in Gutsy
I tried to load Ubuntu and Kubuntu at different times on a notebook I have that was Ubuntu 6.10 and updated online to 7.04. It was running well, but I wanted to kill the dual boot and just make it a Linux computer. It's an Averatec notebook (a 3200) I no longer need, so it's my own little "test lab" so to speak.
I could get it to load, but the wireless, even though I tried everything that was suggested on a special help wiki (all of those diagnostics, turning off ipv6, and all that stuff). I had the same problem with 7.04 when I had attempted a fresh install rather than the automatic update. Ubuntu and its derivatives work great when wired to a network, but wireless, is one could say, a bit "feisty." My network was always recognized by 7.04 and 7.10 in Ubuntu and Kubuntu, but never connected. I had similar problems with a System76 notebook a few months ago that I returned... the wireless would connect and then slowwwlyyyy dieeee.......
The only way I could get wireless to work on the Averatec was to load 6.10. I tried updating through their system to 7.04, and the whole system locked.
This notebook had also Xandros quite quite well, with everything working out of the box except for a video tweak or two.
The notebook is now running Kubuntu 6.10 beautifully. Finding 6.10 is hard to do, since they want you to get 7.10 or 6.06 LTS versions, but I found it at http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/kubuntu/edgy/
I assume these problems would not occur on my desktop system which is wired to the network. But for now, I have Xandros running on that and have no desire to change that at this time, except perhaps for the next Kubuntu LTS version in April. Xandros is also running my Windows software just fine using CrossOver Linux (WINE). Xandros 5 might be available at that time as well.Linux User # 436826

Re: I cant Connect Wireless Network in Gutsy
You have to blacklist the kernel driver as I described so your system will use the windows driver via ndiswrapper. Rather than wlanassistant, I recommend WICD http://wicd.sourceforge.net/ To each his/her own, but I have tried most and WICD is the best I have come up with so far. To be clear, as best I know, the kernel driver will only get you 11mbs.
