    Grub install fails

I have a multi partition environment and when I install 7.10 the grub installation fails and I must use LILO.

I have not had this problem with other releases.

Is it a problem in the Gutsy GRUB package

    Any solution?

Yep, what toad said ... what exactly does this mean?

      (a) Grub doesn't install where you told it to, or

      (b) Grub installs precisely where you told it to (but the installer numbered your partitions differently than conventional Linux does)? I'm betting this is the actual case -- is it Error 15?

Probably if you experiment with the Grub boot menu, changing the root partition ID from (hd1,0) to (hd1,1) or something like that, you will discover that there is a numbering change that you need to make in the menu.lst file.

The Grub bootloader in *buntu is not specialized in any way, AFAIK. It is the same version of Grub that all current GNU/Linux distros use.

During the initial install ffrom the alternative CD

The GRUB install stage fails. I am attempting to install to the partition boot record.

I go back and install LILO This has occurred more than once

I have tried running grub- install to the partition which is apparently successful except that it fails to generate the grub config and menu list records.

        Thanks for your responses

Sorry to have been short on detail

Gosh, I'd check to be sure your installer CD is OK
          MD5sum
          and
          "Check this CD for Defects"

I've installed 7.10 probably 36 times and never a problem with GRUB installing correctly.

            Re: Grub install fails

I have never used lilo, so cannot comment on that.

The only thing that comes to mind why grub fails:

            improper /boot partition

When you say you want to install it in the partition boot record I take it you mean the master boot record/mbr or do you install it elsewhere and then perhaps cannot find it afterwards?

I don't mean to be nasty here, but I have lost track before with too many partitions on too many hard drives with far, far too many distros spread across the whole damn thing...

Re: Grub install fails (Solved)Not a problem

              I burned a fresh CD

              No problem this time

              Thanks everyone
