    [SOLVED]another kstartupconfig

    Linux newbie and just trying Kubuntu 7.10.

    I did a search about kstartupconfig and there are numerous posts and a few workaround solutions.

    My point is this. Why is this happening to so many people?

    Is this something that can't be fixed on the live-cd?

    Ubuntu/Kubuntu is touted at the best distro out there for a newbie coming from Windows. When you can't log in after a fresh install then that is a major problem for someone with very little knowledge of Linux.

    Frustrating to say the least. Don't have time to deal with it right now. Will try back later today and see if I can find the solution. Feel free to add your comments to this so that it might help others.

    Anybody any idea what the problem is here or have I misread the post?

        Just a few dumb questions:
        At install did you set a password for your username?

        Did you forget your password?

        can yo boot into recovery mode?

        If so type:
        startx at the prompt to get into the "root" gui.

        Go to system settings->user manger and have a look at your user account. passwords, groups, and where it lives (/home /username, etc.)

        Do you have a separate /home partition?

        Is it mounted?

          Fintan, boy you just hit on a situation I encountered, point-for-point!

          I copied using dd a separate home to another partition; ditto for the separate root partition (dd-moved to a new partition). At the GUI login, when getting kstartconfig, I simply rebooted and it would work ok.
          But I did, previously, have to get into things manually making sure the OS was mounting that new/moved separate home (and making sure the moved and re-used fstab was properly updated with current info).
          I had too many variables moving to really tie it down in any more detail than this.
          But the factors you listed were right-on in my case.

            Well, mike one learns from experience, especially painful ones

                  Recovery mode is the second boot option and is callesw "recovery mode". It basicly gives you the
                  root gui.

                    After doing some research I found directions about logging in as single. When I did that I found that I could only create another user name, not edit the original user name and password. Not sure what single is but it seemed like I was limited in what I could do.

                    OK, probably a dumb question...If I log in as recovery mode as root then what do I need to do to get out of the login loop pertaining to my original login name and password.

                    No one uses this machine except me. I have another computer but they are not networked. I have internet access thru a dsl modem/router. Both machines have internet access with no problems but I haven't gotten far enough in my knowledge with Linux to share files between the pcs.

                      When you are booted using Recovery mode, and at the prompt, type:
                      Code:
                      df -hTxtmpfs
                      This will give you a listing of your mounted partitions and the space statistics, like mine:
                      Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
                      /dev/sda3 ext3 7.9G 3.0G 4.6G 39% /
                      /dev/sda7 ext3 20G 186M 19G 1% /home
                      /dev/sda1 ext3 7.9G 2.9G 4.9G 37% /media/sda1
                      /dev/sda2 ext3 7.9G 3.0G 4.6G 40% /media/sda2
                      /dev/sda5 ext3 20G 2.6G 18G 13% /media/sda5
                      /dev/sda6 ext3 20G 6.6G 13G 36% /media/sda6
                      What you are concerned with is the Size, Used, and Avail stats for your root ( / ) partition. If Avail is showing as 0% then you have a serious space problem on your bootable partition.
                      Windows no longer obstructs my view.

                        I am going to call off this quest and start over. Thanks everyone for the attempts to help me. I am way over my head here and can't even log in. I will re-install and see how it goes. I may just wait for 8.04.
