There are two Auto-Start locations. One is in your Home folder:
~/.kde/Autostart/

The other is here (be careful, some of the entries here are necessary. You also need to be root to modify this area)
/usr/share/autostart/

What version of Kubuntu are you running? That first one should be there, it is a must for Kubuntu with KDE 3.5.9 and below to function.

/home/**Your User Name**/.kde/Autostart/.

Also make sure you can see hidden files as anything that is preceded with "." is hidden.

gutsy, ok I've got it in that dir

Autostart env socket-bob-desktop
cache-bob-desktop share tmp-bob-desktop

Do I need to get kate to that dir to open it?

I opened kate w/ alt+f2 run as root, but not sure how to point it there or see the hidden file.

As far as your Home directory, do everything under your user name. Modifying things in Home as root can leave you with some thing inaccessible.

That said, you listed the printout of your directory listings. As you can see there is one there listed Autostart. What is in that directory? If you open your home directory in Dolphin, go up to the Menu bar click on View and then on Show Hidden Files. That will let you see those hidden files and directories. Again, while in your Home directory do everything normally, don't use root.

I think I've lost you. My fault and sorry. Let's start all over.

Alt-F2 and type konqueror and click on run.
In konqueror click on Home Folder.
From the menu click on View. If a checkmark isn't already next to Show Hidden Files, then click on Show Hidden Files.
Once visible, the hidden folders and files will appear grayed out. Find the one that is labeled .kde and open it.
Once open, there should be a folder labeled Autostart. Open it. What is in that folder. These are personal startup items unlike the other folder you were in.

That's the same as I got in dolphin. They only thing in Autostart is .directory and the list above is what's in it.

OK then. There is nothing set to Autostart. I don't know what .directory is as I don't have that. Can you open that folder or file? Another place to check is go to System Settings, click on the Advanced tab and open Service Manager. See if by chance those had been put there. Slim chance but the only other place I know to look.

Do my eyes deceive me, or is that exactly the same file you posted on #6 above? That's NOT a /home/user/.kde/Autostart directory!

From how I'm interpreting it, that is the contents of a file named ".desktop" inside Autostart. I don't have a file named that in my Autostart. They all have a name prior to the "." (like --> skaramba.desktop). I'm not too sure what that is. Maybe you can move it somewhere within you home folder and see what happens?

now the autostart folder isn't even there under .kde. That is where I got the file from before though. I'm considering a fresh install w/ hardy due to the sound problems I haven't been able to work out.
