I have a Dell laptop with WinXP and another Linux distro in a dual boot setup. I would like to replace the other distro with Kubuntu. Do I use the standard procedure to remove the Linux partition and repair the MBR followed by an install of Kubuntu? Is there a better way? Thanks.

Re: Change Distros
I don't think a "repair" of the MBR will be needed. Just install Kubuntu over the existing Linux, using the same partitions, and let it write Grub to the MBR, and it should pick up the XP installation and set up a proper dual boot menu for you.

Re: Change Distros
No problem.
If you're worried about it, use the Alternate Install CD, and choose "manual partitioning", and then on the screen where you select the mount points tell it to format the partitions when it installs, and that will make sure the prior stuff is gone when Kubuntu is installed.

If it turns out there is something in Windows that you can't live without, ask about VMWare Player and we'll fix you up. VirtualBox has its fans, too.
